Solved Update Loop

Hello!

I have a Dell Laptop using Vista that is currently in the update "stage 3 of 3 0%" loop. It will restart and come back to the same update screen again and again.
So far I have managed to use System Restore to get myself back to the log on screen and do everything as normal. Whenever I shut down or restart, I encounter the same problem again.

I´ve read that I have to rename/delete pending.xml file but all I get is access denied messages. Tried using Command Prompt to delete it but again, access denied.

I have no idea what to do to stop the loop happening again.
I dont have any Vista install cds, I´ve read most of the sites that promise a fix but so far with no luck.

Hoping someone on this forum knows how to get rid of the problem.

You probably need to revert the pending installs, rather than just delete the pending.xml file.

This is the command to run when booted offline at a recovery command prompt

dism.exe /image:C:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions

Thanks for the reply.

I tried the command but it says "dism.exe is not recongnized as an internal or external command, operable programm or batch file.

Maybe its because its trying to run it from the X: ?

I dont know how to make it run from C:

Nah - I forgot that Vista doesn't have DISM :(
What happens if you force it to boot to Safe Mode once it's in the loop?

Nothing happens, it loads the files it usually does and when its finished im back in the loop with stage 3 0%.

I suppose the easiest way is to just install new OS.

What are the updates it's trying to install when this happens? List all KB numbers or upload a screenshot of the WU list.

Ok, I did another system restore and right now these are the updates shown in Windows Update which are ready to be installed, so I guess they are already downloaded. Which is why I get the loop whenever I shut down or restart, I guess.

KB2901983
KB3074230
KB3074550
KB890830
KB915597
KB3085546
KB3054993

And without KB numbers are:

Microsoft Office File Validation Add-In (Office 2013)
Microsoft Office File Validation Add-In (Office 2007)

How did you come to download a batch of updates for Microsoft Office and .NET Framework 4 that does not include anything for Vista itself or the Cumulative Security Update for IE 9?

Anyway, my first thought is to deselect (don't install) the item identified as KB915597, which I think is just a definition update for the Vista version of Windows Defender (which should probably be disabled anyway to avoid conflicts with your antivirus).

Hi,

Before that try this fix: - See attached file! or create your own batch file (Clear.bat) with this text in it & then run the file.
