Solved Security Update for Windows Vista (KB2570947): Deja Vu?

Windows Update is today telling me to install KB2570947 (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=27335), which is a security update from 2011. Is anyone else getting that?

For many years I installed all important updates without giving it much thought, but in recent months I have grown suspicious of Windows Update. I reinstalled Vista in March, and Update History shows that KB2570947 was successfully installed 3/16/2015. It is also listed in Installed Updates. I haven't (re)installed it yet because I'm not sure what to make of this or how to proceed. Should I uninstall it first, or just hide the update and hope this doesn't happen again?

Well after another check for updates this morning, Windows Update is no longer telling me to install KB2570947. I didn't hide it; it simply no longer appears as available. This does not inspire confidence in Windows Update!

[Edit] If only the check for updates would slooow down a little more and take its time, perhaps errors like this could be avoided?

I reinstalled Vista yesterday and it omitted all IE updates completely, rendering every site I access to come up with Operation Aborted, even Microsoft's site does this.

Hello DixieKongJD. I'm not sure how your post is related to mine, which I am now marking as solved; but I would be happy to discuss browser issues related to reinstalling Vista with you. (I would really hate to reinstall Vista now, with Windows Update working as lousy as it is. Hopefully I will never have to go back any further than an image I made in July.)

It is well-known that the Microsoft website no longer supports IE 7. I don't know about IE 8, but I do know that Windows Update will never give you IE 8. Did the disc that you reinstalled Vista from include SP1? If not, you should install Firefox or something and download the SP1 installer, because it probably won't install properly via Windows Update these days.

Once SP2 and certain other prerequisites have been installed, Windows Update should give you IE 9 - but only if Windows Update is set to "give me updates for Microsoft products and check for new optional Microsoft software when I update Windows," which is not a default setting.

Many websites are now threatening to end support for IE 9, which is obsolescent at best; but of course I know what alternative browsers you prefer.

I used the Packard Bell Recovery Management on the hidden partition, to restore Vista, which had SP1 on it.
Since SP2 performance was a little less than SP1 and there was other things that made me restore it.

Previously it would give me updates for IE 7 anyway which had been made for all versions of IE - even IE6 on XP (thanks to a registry hack) was getting the same updates - since the reinstall it wouldn't offer me anything, even the old ones.

I sort of have proof. No running processes which were consuming memory, changed the style so that it wasn't Aero, yet software was lagging more, until I restarted.

Choosing to run Vista SP1 makes about as much sense as choosing to run XP SP2. Even for Vista users running still-supported SP2, support for IE versions earlier than 9 will end on January 12 (hope you have an alternative browser installed by now because I'm going to post some Microsoft links): https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle#gp/Microsoft-Internet-Explorer.

If you are determined to run SP1, then I would suggest IE 8: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/internet-explorer-8-details.aspx. Would Windows Update give you updates for it? Probably not, because your OS is not supported; but I don't really know. In theory you could download the updates yourself. I have just spent a little time googling "cumulative security update for internet explorer 8 for windows vista x64" on your behalf, and I'm afraid the most recent updates require SP2. But here's one from January 2010 that should definitely be compatible with SP1: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=571. If you do install IE 8, I would be interested to know if the Microsoft website still supports it. At least you won't have to worry about how poorly Windows Update is working these days.

I strongly suggest installing sp2. I don't understand why anyone wouldn't. No new builds service packs aren't initially offered because certain updates need to be installed first such as a few to windows update also an update to windows installer. However you should be able to install the full download at any time. I keep a copy of it on my hard drive.
