| Alternatives until WinFS is released? I'm looking for alternatives to use for organizing my files until WinFS is released. Until now I've flip-flopped between organizing based on categories and file types. I wrote a PHP/mySQL script to organize my bookmarks in the way that I would now like to organize my files; each bookmark is associated with all categories that it fits into and bookmarks can be found by matching one or more categories. This helps in any case where I might forget what category first came to mind when storing the file since I can usually remember at least one of them. I'd like to organize my files in the same manner. From what I understand, WinFS will make file storage similar to this but I would like to have something to use now. Is there anything out there today that is similar? I'm tempted to begin working on my own application but I fear by the time I have it completed WinFS will be released and all the work will go to waste. Thanks Dave |

| RE: Alternatives until WinFS is released? You may want to look into Microsoft Or Google Desktop search, but i dont think they provide tagging functioanlity like you want. Also, there would be no guarentee these tags would be winfs compatible, so you would be doubling your work. IF winfs beta 2 is comming out soon, and releast early next year, i think it might be worth the wait, and not worth the time of doing things to your file system at this time. | Re: Alternatives until WinFS is released? You can add tagging to Windows Desktop Search on XP / 2003 by installing PHLAT interface from Microsoft Research.
