| Guest | WinFS support for Alternate Data Streams (ADS) Hi, the WinFS SDK documentation states that..."If you attempt to copy this text file to a "WinFS" store, you will receive the following error: The file example.txt has extra information attached to it that might be lost if you continue copying. The contents of the file will not be affected...." I have tested this, copying a file with ADS data to the WinFS store. No warning No message appears during this operation. Anyone can help? It really looks like WinFS does not support ADS, I have tested it. Best Regards, Marc Ochsenmeier www.ochsenmeier.de |

| Guest | RE: WinFS support for Alternate Data Streams (ADS) Well, I just tested it, and beta 1 definitely does not support ADS. If you access the store from the network share (and not the WinFS namespace extension under My Computer), you will get the error message stated below. If you then try to access the alternate stream you'll get a message "The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect." I thought perhaps it was just the RsFx driver that didn't support the syntax, so I copied an ADS file into WinFS using the namespace extension (which probably uses RsFx still anyway), and it did not give me the error message, so I copied the file back out to take a look at it. When I copied the file back out, the ADS streams were gone. So, based on my tests too, it appears they are not supported. | Guest | RE: WinFS support for Alternate Data Streams (ADS) Yes, We don't support ADS in WinFS Beta 1. We're considering doing this for WinFS v1 based on customer requirements. More on this soon. -Ben Bgrol@microsoft.com [MSFT] This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights "Aaron Oneal" wrote: > Well, I just tested it, and beta 1 definitely does not support ADS. | Guest | Re: WinFS support for Alternate Data Streams (ADS) It seems that WinFS Beta 1 has not included many of the great features of the NTFS file system - hard links, reparse points, alternate / multiple data streams. I assume that you're going to have support for these? Otherwaise (eg, for the metadata that is so much a part of the WinFS model) you'll really piss off a lot of peope who use either the standard or extended property sheets, or (like me) the ADS as a much more customizable target for complex, large metadata. What's the update on this? Can we expect some exploration on the team blog "What's in Store?" ?
