WinFS release date

Hello again.
Could you say WinFS beta 2 delivery date or WinFS release date?
Thanks again.

Re: WinFS release date

Hi Artem-

My name is Shan Sinha and I run evangelism for WinFS. We have not announced
a release date for WinFS. However, it will be released sometime after we
release Windows Vista.

However, Beta 2 will be released later this year.

Hope this helps!

Cheers-
Shan

Re: WinFS release date

Have any of these dates changed since the latest vista announcement of
possibly not shipping till 2007?

I'm also glad to see some more activity on the forums...the forums have been
very dead since December, the blogs haven't been updated since 12/1/05, and I
was beginning to worry everyone has lost interest and winfs wasn't being
supported anymore.

We are trying to move forward with development, but without a strong
community and some idea when beta 2 would be coming out making forward
progress is very hard. We would hate to sink all of these development
resources into beta 1 to find beta 2 possibly changes so much. But with no
roadmap, updates via forums or blogs I am just grasping at straws of what may
or may not happen.

Sorry this got off track, but it seems the best place to post. Thanks again
and looking forward to a reply.

Re: WinFS release date

Hi Ben-

Thanks for your note. The Vista announcement does not affect our delivery
plans. Beta 2 continues to be planned for release later this year, as
described in my previous note. RTM plans also remain unchanged.

I hear your concern with lack of information on WinFS. I assure you that we
will continue to remain as accessible as we can via our blogs, newsgroups
and other community efforts. The idea guiding Beta 2 is that we intend for
it to be the build that developers can begin to adopt for their
applications, with a reasonable amount of assurance that they will be able
develop applications that do not become obsolete. Between Beta 1 and Beta2,
the changes we are making to the platform will be somewhat more substantial
than the changes we expect to see in builds coming beyond Beta 2.

As we mentioned in PDC, one of the big updates we will be including in Beta
2 is the integration of the ADO.NET programming interface. We will also be
updating the Item Data model. These two updates will cause some impact to
applications built with Beta 1. I'm certain that this was expected.
However, we believe that the updates we are making between Beta 1 and Beta
2 are the right ones and know that all those who adopt WinFS will benefit
from them. We continue to be interested in hearing about your experiences
with Beta 1 and about all the cool applications you are developing.

Re: WinFS release date

Hi Jerome-

I assure you we are going much further than ObjectSpaces. Our primary
reason for not releasing as much information sooner rather than later is
that we are focused on ensuring that we deliver on everything what we
announce, rather than leaving ourselves in a position where may promise
something and are not able to deliver on it. I'm sure most of you
understand that to be an area where Microsoft's track record has opportunity
to improve!

Having said that, for those of you who have not already perused the team
blogs at http://blogs.msdn.mcom/winfs, it's a great place where we have
posted much content about what we are trying to build.

Cheers-
Shan

Re: WinFS release date

http://blogs.msdn.com/winfs seems like it's dead. Out of all the blogs I've
seen this one appears to be updated the least. Nothing new on there since
Feb. 24th.

Re: WinFS release date

Hi Jack-

I assure you the blogs are not dead! We are still around. The team has
just been exceedingly busy working on Beta 2. In fact, as we speak, we are
currently getting ready for a handful of new posts to the blog. Stay tuned!

Cheers-
