My documents not responding in Explorer

When I try to get a file listing it either takes minutes or wont respond
(task manager says not responding).
The problem is in "my pictures". My pictures is 19GB in a 80GB disc. Even
"my computer" has a flashlight for minutes, or just sits there.
I have checked the disc (OK), defragmented the disc, and done virus checks
all to no avail.
Windows XP professional 5.1 build 2600 service pack 2

RE: My documents not responding in Explorer

Has anyone responded to this yet? My issue is anything in Windows Explorer
and even the time that it takes to load a change to another directory. "Not
Responding" in Task Manager. Just thought I would ask.

RE: My documents not responding in Explorer

No, no replies. Thanks for inquiring.
I got round the problem my moving the files, one group at a time, to a new
folder in the C drive directory, leaving only an empty "my pictures". But I
never discovered a single file whose shift alleviated the problem, nor was
the problem left in the empty "my pictures," so the corruption of an
individual data file did not seem to be the problem. I don't know what it
was!
