Vista - msdn version Vista Freezes on installation

could my hardware be not supported? How do i tell? Win 2k3r2 installs
fines but not Vista.
It can freeze halfway through installing from boot. Upgrade option
while windows is running says that the installtion exe contains an
error.
Once i got it to the welcome screen after install but couldnt get it
past creating a new user and setting the background it just freezes.
(or else it is taking 1 day to load a new user)
Any ideas of thisgs i can test? It cant be the ram as i have tried
several sticks that work fine with win 2k3r2.

p4 2.4 1.5 gig ram- Gigabyte motherboard.

i also tried it in VMware, it produced a different error saying that
there was a file missing, but it works for someone else on there
machine, there must be something wrong with mine.
I ran mem test fine.
