IE7 & Firefox Stopped working as if no Internet Connection

The Power people came to our door and said they would be turning off the power for 2 hours. I called up to my wife and said do a shutdown on your laptop (Toshiba) and I shut mine down (HP). After the new polls were installed, the power came back on, I was out fishing, came home, turned on my computer, all was fine, went to browse and it (Firefox latest 3xxx). The netwok is fine, AIM loads, my weatherbugs load and get this, EVEN AOL software/browser and what stumps me most, AOL Desktop, which I thought was really even a more generic IE Browser works. FF and IE7 acts as if their is no internet connection.

Wife's was working fine. Reset Sat Modem, Reset Netgear Router. Tried everything I know, crapped out. RESET ROUTER to generic unsecure mode, no different. Uninstallted Mcaffe, nothing, Turned off Windows Firewall, NOTHING. Both browers act like no internet connection (Even went Cat5 hard wire, no change) I am a hardware guy, certainly not a software guy for 25 years. This one has me stumped. As I said AOL works with its browser, desktop works, all the stuff like AIM (standalone) works, Sidebar internet items work, connection is right, no browers.

Any Ideas, wrong forum? Something makes me believe hardware, so I backed it all up and did a simple restore that does not FORMAT or remove files, nothing, went back to SEP 12th Recovery, no help.I am stumped??

Thanks

Scott

Now that you ran cmd.exe from the run or search menu, you will now find it in your windows start. where you see it in the list, right click on it, that allows you to try admin mode, unless of course you do not have admin access, you should if it is your laptop/desktop and try it again.

Hope you do not need to do it, but use the backup in the restore, which I did not, I just copied the entire drive to an external 1TB drive I got at newegg last month for like 159 bucks.

Good Luck Bro. I really need to upgrade to Ultimate, as I am wasting a gig of memory on this 32bit platform

to netsh winsock reset
it says : the operation asked needs an elevation ( i got french vista, so i translate )

to netsh int ip reset C:\resetlog.txt
it says : failure of the reinitialisation of the request from echo
the operation asked needs an elevation
failure of the reinitialisation of general
the operation asked needs an elevation
failure of the reinitialisation of the request from interface
the operation asked needs an elevation
there is no parameters specified by the user to reinitialise

so.. i'm still stuck :-(

it's smell recovery :-P

Yes, that ELEVATION means you need to be in admin mode. As I was saying, and I am sorry, my French Class in high school was only because the pretty girls took french :)

Click on your Start button at the bottom left of your screen. When you do that, you will not see your recent usage of the cmd.exe. RIGHT CLICK your mouse on that and you will see it allows you to select to run it as Administrator. do it that way. then cut and paste in Flavious Instructions. Not sure it will help you, but certainly better than using the restore if you do not need too. You sound a bit different than I, the only Browser I did not try and load was apple's safari, but IE, FF even Flock which I found as an add here did not work. What blew my mind was not only did AOL Paid software work, but their desktop, that anyone can download worked. I thought it stole all its real needs like most do off the kernel/files from IE. All I have learned in the last week is this is a great forum, I am a software idiot (which I already knew) and I never have enough good buds to smoke to not give a crap about Vista. I like so many things in Vista and maybe when I am running a full 64 bit version that extra 4th gig of memory will make my machine operate faster, but I am almost sorry I did not stay with XP, all those bugs I had figured out over the years :)

ahh ok! i went in the proprieties of cmd.exe and i found a '' run as an administrator '' checkbox. But this way it wasnt working. But in the context menu the '' run as an administrator '' works well. The cmd says that i need to reboot to finalise this action. So i'll see when i reboot.

thx

Well. News from me!

The netsh winsock reset and netsh int ip reset C:\resetlog.txt

didnt make something.

I decided to try something else. I downloaded Opera, an other browser but didnt installed it.

Started mozilla firefox, surfed for like 10 min, then it crashed. So i started internet explorer, 5 min after that, it crashed too.

So i installed opera. Surprise, opera AND firefox works for another 10 mins( didnt tried explorer ). but now they are ALL down. Only the browser in limewire works ALL THE TIME. I'm gonna try to uninstall firefox and opera then reinstall them ( after they are all crashed then post the results here. Maybe i will try to uninstall explorer too to clear everything. ( I dont wanna format my PC yet. )

If anyone can help me out.....

Thx

Max

Hi,

Would suggest a system restore, but if it's been going on for weeks you won't have a restore point far back enough.

Do you have a MS install dvd ? If so, try this

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html

May work with a Dell reinstall dvd also - but not a recovery disk - they have been sending out what seem to be straight copies of the MS dvd with some systems.

Hope it helps

Thx SIW2. it's a good idea to just fix vista too, but i have installed, uninstalled a couple of programs on my computer since i have it. ( approx 1 year )

So i think i will go with a full format to get a clean registery and hard drives.

But i really want to know what happened to mozilla and explorer and opera ( and not limewire's browser )

See ya

omg.... i formated my computer 2 weeks ago, everything worked fine until TODAY:cry:.

I didnt installed mozilla and opera, but explorer stopped working. Now only limewire's browser works......

Everything else works well... CS : source, limewire, windows live mail, messenger, windows update...

Some1 can give me a gun??:sleepy:

I am willing to bet you have some issue with malware. Get a good scan of your system, including Malwarebyte's antimalware, and see if it does not find some infections.

BTW, Limewire is a good way to get viruses because you really have no idea what the other folks are sharing.

I have the same problem, I am a noob somone help! I made 3 dvd recovery disk last night on my friends HP computer, he has vista home premium. I have vista ultimate can I take this disk recovery my computer?

My Computer

I've scanned my computer with trendmicro housecall, then with Avast, then with malwarebyte's antimalware... and nothing was found :-( when i reboot everything is fine for 10 mins then explorer do his annoying thing.

My Computer

I think that no you cant use the HP recovery disk because it's made for Home edition instead of Ultimate... but i'm not the right guy to answer to this.

My Computer

@tegowner - hmmm, no malware showing and yet Explorer is crashing. Something is either loading on startup or else loading after a certain time period and crashing explorer. What software do you have starting up, and does it do the same thing in Safe Mode?

@bmart77 - The Vista recovery disc should be standard across the board - however, just to be safe, make sure it is a standard Vista recovery disc and not an HP branded disc - that will hurt you in the long run, especially if it took 3 DVDs to make - because it sounds like it made a "system recovery" disc for that particular HP machine as opposed to the Vista Recovery disc that you want.

This is probably what you want instead - Windows Vista Recovery Disc Download — The NeoSmart Files
