Hey Dingaling,

Let's start with the basics. Do you have an internet connection up an running? If so, you should be able to find very explicit, step-by-step instructions for setting up Windows mail on your ISP's help site. If you are using an online vendor (gmail, aol, or other), most of them are even more user friendly than the ISPs.

If you are having trouble finding instructions for Windows Mail, you can usually work off the instructions for Outlook, with the requisite changes.

Complications:
For most ISPs, all you need is a username and a password. This can get complex, since some of the smaller ISPs have been swallowed up by larger services, and thus have more complex username|domain combinations for signup. Also, your ISP may issue you a different password for email than for network signon.

There is also the problem of ports. Most ISPs and online services have moved to some kind of secure connection. You will have to find out if they use SSL (common for ISPs) or TLS (some online services), and the number (name) of the ports they use for incoming and outgoing messages.

For online services, you may have to change their settings to allow for POP or IMAP connections (a protocol used by your computer to talk to the serving computer), and you will have to set up your connection accordingly.

If you still have problems, let us know how and when you are receiving the error. Unfortunately, these error codes are typically uninformative. Yours is downright generic. Also tell us the ISP (or service) you are using, you may run into someone who knows all the right info here.

But first, read the info online, or call your ISPs hotline (it's what you're paying them for).

Good luck.
