Mail not showing new messages

The new Mail software has stopped refreshing the message listing after a send/receive or when I move a message.
It actually performs the task but after a move the message still shows in the list. I need to move to another folder and back to force a refresh.
Same with send/receive. The folder list actuall shows (1) new message but it's not on the list until I move away and then back again.
Tried bringing everything up to date but no change.
Two identical machines with Vista HP, both accessing the same mail server but different accounts. One is fine the second has the refresh problem.
Started about 2 weeks ago - early July 2009. Really confused the user!
Anyone seen it before?

Hi JMH
Couple of HP Pavilion machines with 250GB HD and 4GB ram. Both Vista Home Premium fully updated. Both have AVG 8.5 anti-virus. Both have MS Office Pro 2003.
Since the problem arrived I've updated IE to v8 but no difference.
I think it's something wrong with Mail not refreshing the message listings when something changes. The folder listings do refresh and I can see (1) added to the Inbox when a message arrives after a send/receive.
The Mail s/w is setup identically on both computers and I've tried changing various viewing options back and forth but no change.
Thanks
ROD
