IE8 crashed with updates HELP

With automatic updates on October 21 my IE8 ceased to load, At the same time my Windows Installer died. Talked to MS techs about IE8 (after I found one who spoke decent English) Had them trying to help for 5 hours. Can not get IE8 or 7 or any other to install. MS decided IE was so corrupted even the uninstaller can not find it.

Summary was to reinstall Vista. I really need to avoid that with about 375 gigs installed on the HD. Difficult to back up everything and even then the registry is corrupt so would need to reinstall all programs...

Does anyone have any ideas how to repair the Windows Installer. I tried the fix by "cat" to no avail. I tried deleting the updates but no help.

you can unistall IE8 to make it go back to 7 or 6.. If you have installed any service pack like "sp2 or 3" after installing IE8 you need to unistall the service pack first then you can uninstall IE8..
All these can be uninstalled under add and remove program.. just tick "show updates"

Try this first, it might help. In IE8 go to tools>options>advanced, click on the reset button. and delete all personal data checked. if that doesnt work go with what ashvin said
You might also want to try going into safe mode for IE8.
Click on the windows orb> all programs> accessories> system tools> Internet explorer no add-ons.
If either wont allow you to go into IE8 right click on internet explorer no add ons and do my first step. see if that helps first before going to the hassle of uninstalling service packs

Thank you folks. However as the Windows installer is also corrupted by the updates there is no way to use install/uninstall in add/remove programs. I did delete IE8 from the updates list. There is still an IE8 folder in the Program Files but the exe file in there will not run. IE8 will not install, probably because of the corrupt installer. Already tried to repair with the system disk to no avail. It wants to format and reinstall, not an option for me as IE sucks anyway and I have over 300 gigs on the HD. A lot is backed up but I would have to reinstall to set the registry. I tried previously safe mode to no avail. As to going into IE8 and doing anything, IE does not load at all.

I seem to be stuck with the only hope dumping the HD Woe is me! I have done this several times in past years for HD crashes and it is not any fun and very time consuming!

I have read much abut repairing the installer but nothing works and a lot of software seems to need the MS installer to install/uninstall. I am beginning to hate MS!!! but it is the only game in town.

Dude dont worry! just install mozilla or Google chrome (the browser not the OS) on the pc and you have internet again. But if the installer is corrupt it might be hard. I recommend a System restore, (restore to: before the update that massacred your machine)

Hello staybolt,
Have you tried to re-install the Windows Installer ?.
I don't know if this will reset the installer, but has to be worth a go.
Good luck and post your results.

I have Firefox so getting on the internet is not the problem. My major problem is with my on-line back up subscription. It only works through IE (Dumb) so my OL back ups are not available although I still have most on an external hard drive, but not as current. Also I have a subscription on MSN which uses IE so that is dead also. The most annoying however is the broken Win installer!

I have always used Norton Security with never a problem for years.

I tried reinstalling the Win installer, it won't let me as it seems to think I already have the installer.

I am considering installing a new hard drive, formatting it with the system disk and then sticking in a copy of the current registry and copying over to the new C drive all my programs rather than going through a complete reinstall from CD's as many have a lot of later add on's and some are internet downloads I paid for.

A couple of things to try, before you go through all the re-install grief.

Below is the Registry setting that controls the Windows Installer Service.
Have a look in your Registry and see if your dword is set to 2.
The setting of 2 tells the system it starts Automatic and is what it should
be.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\msiserver]
"Start"=dword:00000002

Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

As your thinking of re-installing, theres nothing to lose.
