Solved Internet Explorer 7 won't access wireless connection

This began all of a sudden a couple of weeks ago on my laptop: when I start IE, no matter what website I want to go to, I get the message that IE can't display the website. When I diagnose the problem, it tells me there is no problem and I am currently connected to my network. In the network and sharing center, it shows I am connected and the strenght is excellent. I have reset all internet options to default, have run multiple utilities checking for corrupt files, etc.

Any ideas??

Open Device Manager and see if there are any red x's or yellow flags next to your network adapter. Next, open a command prompt, Windows Key + R, type cmd and then type the following without the quotes and paste all the results back here, "ipconfig /all". Also check, open IE, click Tools, Internet Options, Connection Tab and then the LAN Tab and in the window that opens make sure that all the check boxes are clear, if not clear them and close IE and re-open IE.

I checked the device manager and no flags or x's. I ran the command prompt also. However, I am not typing this from my laptop because of the lack of internet access, so I can't paste the results here. I may be able to copy it line-by-line into a word doc, then cut and paste. I will give that a try. Also, I checked the LAN settings and none of the boxes were checked.

I will post the configuration results as soon as I copy them to a doc.

lol all you have to do is left-click the command prompt image on the top left of the command prompt. scroll down to edit, then mark. drag the window over all of the words you want to copy, then go to left-click the same image, go to edit, then copy. you don't have to type word for word in a document.

Try reviewing the following article:

Tips for solving problems with Internet Explorer

If that doesn't resolve the problem, then try the following two procedures in the order presented:

Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer’s (No Add-ons) Mode [Applies to IE7 & IE8 in all OSS]
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/07/25/678113.aspx

How to troubleshoot Internet Explorer issues in Windows Vista and in Windows XP

Hopefully, one of these procedures/articles will help you resolve your problems with IE.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Hey bro, only trying to help. You can paste to a document and save it to a thumb drive, and upload it to the working computer. You may not have a thumb drive, but I wouldn't know that.

Previous to my having this problem, my Norton Security account had expired and I had attempted to uninstall the program through Glary Utilities. I was having another problem and did a little research which brought me to the Norton Removal Tool. I didn't download it at the time because that was when I lost all internet access to my laptop and everyone was telling me it was an IE7 problem (although I remained convinced it was a security problem because I connected to the internet through my router, but it seemed like I just couldn't access the connection.)

Either way, I finally decided to install the Norton Removal Tool and run it. After restarting my laptop, I was able to access the internet (although I did need to use some other advice I found in another Vista forum regarding the removal of an AOL redirect.)

End result - after running Malwarebytes, HijackThis and updating Avast, and defragmenting my hard drive, everything is running like clockwork.

Thanks for the help!

Congratulations on resolving the problem mostly on your own and I'm very pleased to hear that you're back to normal again. Well done! Maybe some of the articles helped a bit, but it sounds to me like they at best gave you hints - you deserve the credit on this one.

From your explanation of the solution (which we very much appreciate as it will help others with the same problem and maybe prompt us to consider such things earlier in the process), it seems you had remanants of Norton causing some problems (only the removal tool works with Norton) and possibly were also infected with malware that Malwarebytes probably resolved. I'm also glad to hear you're using Avast instead of Norton (it's a very good choice and MUCH better than anything from Norton).

Don't forget to close out the thread by clicking the far right triangular icon at the top of your post and typing "solved" in the box and submitting it. The moderators will notice and put a green check next to the thread title. That way others seeking answers by searching the forums will know that this thread contains a solution to the issue identified in the title - and people seeking to help will not waste time checking out this thread since it has been resolved.

And welcome to Vista Forums! Now that you know where we are, bookmark the site and post anytime you have further questions or problems or if you just want to browse and learn (especially the Tutorial section offers some excellent advice on a wide variety of topics) or even if you want to try to help answer a question if you happen to see one where you know the answer and it hasn't already been posted.

While it most likely won't be me the next time (though it might), there are many very skilled, experienced, knowledgeable, and friendly people here who, like me, volunteer their time to help others and one or maybe even several will respond to your post to assist you. While there are other forums on the web that do this sort of thing, you've now found what I think is the best (and I've posted in and/or checked out quite a few) so don't lose this link - you never know when it might come in handy again.

Good luck and best wishes!

Actually, it was through the IE Assistant, Hijack Restore, in Glary Utilities that I found the redirect. I copied the web address and Googled it, which, if I remember right, led me to this forum. In another post somewhere regarding the AOL redirect, I read about the HJT log and how to delete the redirect (which, of course, I did). I didn't download and run Malwarebytes until after everything was said and done, and felt I wanted/needed that extra protection.

I came back to post my original solution regarding the Norton Removal Tool because I'm sure there are millions of people out there that will have the same issue as I did and have no earthly idea of what could be wrong. I don't ever remember seeing anything about needing a "removal tool" to get rid of Norton prior to any of this happening, so I want to warn/inform as many people as possible about it. Knowing now what I do about Norton, and how it literally hijacks one's computer, I will be very vocal at every opportunity.

I will also be very vocal about this website as I've really learned quite a bit. After spending a short time reading about various solutions to similar problems, I took what I thought were the most logical applications to my problem and went from there. I couldn't have done it without all of the people taking the time to post both problems and solutions here, so thank you all very much.

I will indeed bookmark this website, and tell anyone who will listen to check here next time they have a problem. Thanks again!
