Solved cannot connect to smtp (not simple)

Hey guys, I'm all out of ideas here and was hoping you might be able to help me.

A friend recently changed email provider from Orange to BT but wanted to keep her Orange email. (.fsworld.co.uk) since the ISP change we have been unable to connect to the smpt server from outlook on her computer or windows mail on mine. The incoming mail server works fine. I have other email accounts on both computers which work fine with both programs. The settings i am using are as follows.

Pop3 server
In coming mail - pop.orangehome.co.uk
Out going -smtp.orangehome.co.uk
Incoming mail server user name - *******.fsworld.co.uk
outgoing mail server - requires authentication is checked and the details are the same as incoming.
I am not using secure password authentication.
ports - outgoing 25, incoming -110

Now, If i use outgoing port 25 then it simply won't connect and i get the usual
"The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'testoooo', Account: 'pop.orangehome.co.uk', Server: 'smtp.orangehome.co.uk', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E"

However, if i use port 587 then i get the box pop up asking me to "please verify that the user name and password are correct for your mail server" I enter the correct details but the box just keeps popping back up.

I am starting to think that when my friend transferred from orange they killed the email account as well?

Thanks for reading and for any ideas/thoughts you have

Im pretty sure of the problem here. Your ISP will not let you send via the other email to avoid spam. What you have to do is set up SMPT per your ISP instructions, per their website, and have your return addess show whatever you want.

Thanks for the reply. You think that both my friend isp and my own could be doing this?

What I know is that I had the same problem, I could not send. After researching, I found that I could send if I used the SMPT of my Internet Provider and used the return address of my own email service. The best way to find out if you have the same problem is to try.

Just to make sure i'm not doing somthing silly here, When the windows security box pops up asking you to log on to the mail server. "please verify that both the username and password are correct for your mail server" which username and password is it that they are looking for?

My Computer

You have to put the name and password of your email account.
If the email provider was the former ISP, that account would no longer be available, however.
Not being in the UK, I am not familiar with the email and/or ISP that you have.

If the email provider is also the ISP, the old ISP is no loger available to you.
If the email provider is different from the ISP, then the Pasword and ID is for the email provider. You would use the setrtings for the ISP to set up SMPT.

Hello!

I have Orange from Freeserve (slightly different: .fsnet.co.uk and orange.co.uk)

Firstly, are you absolutely sure that those are the settings you were previously using? In particular, what are you using as your user name? I need to use my whole email address, and not the xxxxx.fsnet.co.uk@fs which is a different user name. I need [email protected]

Getting my user name wrong causes exactly this:

"please verify that the user name and password are correct for your mail server" I enter the correct details but the box just keeps popping back up.

Please can you confirm that you have at least tried your user name as your whole email.

Secondly, SMTP and POP can be completely different. I have pop.freeserve.net and pop.freeserve.net, but they could be completely different - I think that one has moved to BT, which I think is what Richc46 is also saying.

Finally, are you sure that you need all of this authentication? Mine doesn't use SPA, but we could be a league apart, now you are on BT.

The very best of luck!

Richard

Hi fecto3210,

Here's another possibility. Here's a listing of e-mail server addresses for each provider which can be used with any ISP: ::. Kitz - DNS and mail servers .::. They differ from the ones you are currently using for Orange. Perhaps if you try these settings instead you will meet with success.

If they stilll don't work, try the SMTP settings for AOL and see if that makes any difference. If not, try the details for your AOL account in the SMTP authentication information. If that works, you would then probably need to change the return address in Outlook and Windows Mail to the Orange address so it would appear correctly and replies would go to the correct account.

As Niemiro says, make sure you are using the correct email-address and that you have the proper settings. I suspect you're OK there as you're getting your incoming e-mail OK, but SMTP could operate differently. Try both with and without authentication and if with, keep the information consisitent with the servername you are using (which may make them different). Keep secure authentication off.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the replies.

Please keep in mind that i am currently at home trying to solve the problem and my ISP is AOl.
I shall say as far as i have got using different scenarios.

Using smtp.orangehome.co.uk and [email protected] as the log in with port 25 i cannot connect at all.

Using the above settings with port 587 I get the password box pop up so i enter [email protected] as the user name and i enter my password which works fine on sites like mail2web. The box just keeps popping back up as if i am entering the details wrong. I have also tried *****.fsworld.co.uk and *****.fsworld.co.uk@fs as the user names.

If i try to use my ISP SMPT server smtp.uk.aol.com with port 25 and ****@aol.com with my aol password as my outgoing mail server details i get this error message.
The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the "I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '[email protected]'. Subject 'asdasd', Account: 'pop.orangehome.co.uk', Server: 'smtp.uk.aol.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '553 5.7.1 <[email protected]>: Sender address rejected: not owned by user *****@aol.com', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 553, Error Number: 0x800CCC78

If i try the same details as above with port 587 the result is the same. Checking "this server requires a secure connection (SSL)" makes no difference.

thanks again for spending your time on this.

Note: I wrote this before reading your reply lorien. I shall try your suggestion.

If the Orange generic options don't work, try using smtp.aol.com as per my prior link and see if that works any better than smtp.uk.aol.com.

I'm still getting no luck :( however could this line be of significance?

"Sender address rejected: not owned by user *****@aol.com"

Hmm I think i need to validate the orange email with AOL so i can use there smtp server with it. I don't know if this can be done with aol though. However i am fairly sure it can be done with BT so i might be able to get it working from her house.

It seems like the server somehow got you mixed up with another user - and I'm surprised the error message includes someone's email address. I'm sure it means something, but I honestly don't know what and have no clue how to change things to correct that problem.

At this point, I would contact both Orange and AOL technical support (I think AOL first) and explain the situation and see if either or both can assist you with setting up SMTP properly. There's something here we're all missing but they probably encounter situations like this several times a day and should be able to help you (and I hope they don't just pass you back and forth).

Good luck!

I'v solved it :D

It was bascily this

"Hmm I think i need to validate the orange email with AOL so i can use there smtp server with it. I don't know if this can be done with aol though. However i am fairly sure it can be done with BT so i might be able to get it working from her house."

However i obviosly don't need to be at her house to use her BT smtp server unlike what i said above lol. the Jdthharv aol username was mine by the way. It was the username i was entering in the outgoing mail server settings while trying to use the aol SMTP server. I shall edit it out of the posts now the problem is solved to avoid spam.

It is lucky that she has bt instead of aol however because they won't allow non aol email addresses to use there smtp server it seems.
Thanks for all your help.

Hi fecto3210,

It was our pleasure. I'm glad for any help we were able to provide - even if it was just a hint to nudge you in the right direction

Your assessment sounds reasonable. You can either try to do it on your own or contact AOL and/or BT to see if they can help (it might make things go a lot faster).

I hope this works for you - even if you need to get help from AOL and/or BT - and that it turns out to be possible (or should I say, allowed) in both cases.

Thanks for the feedback - it is most appreciated.

Good luck and best wishes!

I use windows Mail. Vista home prem 32. I use Centurytel at work and Suddenlink at home. I can send get mail at home (Suddenlink ISP) but canot send. Before I got laptop with Vista, I could send & recive from work & home no probelm. I have set up a new email address using the sudden link settings. When I open my Windows email, my mail comes in, but a box pops up asking me for my Suddenlink Login & Password. This is my wife's acct and she has given me every password she has but it will not take any of them? Suddenlink nor Cnturytel will help me reslove the issue and say it is a Microsoft Windows Mail issue ... Pictures attached.
