Problem ID1518 when trying to install Silverlight

Dear all,

I learned Silverlight4 was out of date thanks to Secunia. I tried to install version5.

Although version4 has been succesfully uninstalled, I cannot install the 5.

My system cannot accept 64version of Silverlight, it says.

Frequently Asked Questions

But I have a 64 version of Vista, Firefox and Chrome and IE all are perfectly up-to-date.

I therefore wonder: why doesn't it work?

please someone help me...

Welcome
Lets try the simple things first.
Download and use Ccleaner to get rid of all the remnants.
If that does not work use system restore to put the entire thing back the way it was. Download and use the trial version (for 64 bit) of revno and unistall with that.

I cleaned temp programs and registry keys thanks to Cleaner, as the software proposed to me.

I then tried the installation...the same error message occured.

By the way, I can see Silverlight neither in Revo Uninstaller not in Secunia now. So the uninstallation (probably) was a success.

I'm sorry...

If it does not show there can still be remanants. Re install using System Restore then uninstall with Revo.

Thank you for your help Richard.

I did the System Restauration and re-did the unistallation thanks to Revo - the slowest uninsllation mode amongst the four.
I also went to the Appdata to delete remaining Silverlight files.

But when I try to launch the Silverlight installation it still says me that I cannot install - my system does not take 64bits Silverlight. Is that possible if I have a 64VistaWindows- Family Edition?

Or is this I still have a registry key to delete? Which one?

OK
Did a quick Google, seems to be a common problem. No answers. See if you can download the 32 bit, and see what happens.

no prob, found that on another thread on the site, figured I'd do my good deed of the year and help.

to the mods/admins, is there any way to get that link to the 32bit silverlight posted somewhere more promanent on the site given the common nature of this problem(namely silverlight 64bit not being compatible with vista64bit)?

been there, tried that.

I did find a workaround after posting my message.

workaround:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=229320

found it here after doing a google search: your operating system does not support the 64-bit setup of silverlight : The Official Microsoft Silverlight.NET Forums

quite vexing, given all I use silverlight for is the xbox website....

The forum link provided is very useful. Indeed the final solution is installing through the extracted msi and msp files from the downloaded End-User Runtime for Windows (64 bit) (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=229321 "Silverlight_x64.exe").

The aforementioned windows installer files are "silverlight.msi" and "Silverlight.msp" which you can find in "Silverlight_x64.exe" by using 7-Zip.

the problem there is that I already tried that and the installer refused to run, hence the workaround I posted after several hours digging.

However the measurement works for me on my Windows Vista Enterprise x64 where installing from either the downloaded executable or the extracted install.exe fails.

*shrugs* guess we found two completely seperate solutions to the same problem, lol.

Since it is not a clean installation that I have installed and then uninstalled the x86 version of Silverlight beforehand, perhaps fiddling with the x86 one first is a prerequisite. f*ck Microsoft!
