I have lost protocol accoiations for defualt FF.. Vista REFUSES to se FF as default

Hello.
Up until about a year ago i was able to open links from for example chat application such as Mirc (an irc client)... then links would open into FF (since at the time i had it set as default browser).

For some reason after a win update I lost ALL association to FF.. everything was opening in IE. I manually set some things to open with FF but the persistent problem is still that im unable to click on links in for example an irc client without it opening in IE. No its not a fault with the irc client, Start/run Google will open IE when before it was opening in FF.

Right all that said a few things to point out.. I KNOW how to make FF default. ive done it many many many times before over many versions of Windows. The problem here is something deep in windows, I suspect perhaps the registry.

Anyway
Control panel / net options / default programs / Set your default programmes
Here right at the top is FireFox.. IE is not listed.. i click on FF and everything seems to be checked for association.. great. yet.. links are opening in IE

so next
Control panel / net options / default programs / associate a file type or protocol with a specific programme
Here i scroll right down until i see the "Protocols" page break .. and under those i see FTP, HTTP, HTTPS (all set with IE icons and set to open with IE) even tho according to ((Control panel / net options / default programs / Set your default programmes)) its clearly not?? so what the hell is going on here?
So anyway.. i click on for example FTP, then click the "change programme" button.. a window comes up showing available browsers, and guess what, the only icon there is IE .. no sign of FF, despite vista clearly telling me otherwise, and despite FF clearly being installed.

Before anyone asks
Yes i have uninstalled and reinstalled FF more times that ive had hot dinners.
No i cant uninstall IE because MS makes it impossible to do so.
Yes i have done plenty of system restores since this issue has arose.
Yes ive tried installing various older versions of FF
Yes ive tried safe mode with all the above steps repeated
No i don't have any viruses and spy ware or anything that might be effecting this issue in that way.
No i have not reinstalled windows, simply because this pc i got 3 or so years ago came with it pre-installed.. they didn't provide support disks (which i wasn't too bothered at the time about), but now im sorry i didn't bring it up. I cannot afford 100+ euro to spend on an OS that is already working perfectly fine (apart from this issue of course) ...

so before anyone comes at me with any of the above, or lazily concludes "just resinstall windows" ... you now know why.

although this issue isn't really a serious one, it is rather annoying, i am helping with support chat rooms that require people posting links regularly, my life has become just that little bit more of a pain in the behind since this issue started about a year ago.

So anyway today I decided to do something about it since i cant seem to fix the problem myself, or get any valued help from other forums.

Dose anyone know what is going on here? why is windows showing FF as defualt then in another dialogue showing IE as default.. Why is FF not appearing as a usable browser in windows (associate a file type or protocol with a specific programme dialogue).

I sure hope someone can help
regards

I have read your post and found one discrepency, which may be important. Yes, you cannot uninstall IE, but you can for all intents and purposes remove it. Go to search, by the start button, type turn windows features on and off. Then proceed to turn IE off. Lets see what happens.
Try with another Administrator account, too, and see if your Browser works any better.
Could just be a corrupt account.

Re: I have lost protocol accoiations for defualt FF.. Vista REFUSES to se FF as defau

Hi Ricard, and let me say first of all thankyou so much for the prompt reply.
I wasnt aware one could disable IE.
I am a little confused as to what you mean by "Go to search, by the start button, type turn windows features on and off. Then proceed to turn IE off"
Well ive never searched for those sorts of strings in a windows search before, but i type the text "turn windows features on and off" and did a system wide search. including looking in non indexed locations.. Nothing was found.
So you mean search this forum? .. well i guess now that i know its possible to disable IE perhaps i can google it.. tho i said I had no idea that was possible , thats for tha heads up on that..

Ill let you know how i got on

Heya.. ok found that option via ctr panel..
I must stress im not very technical when it comes to this sort of stuff.
I did bring up the window of a list of folders. however Im totally clueless as to what to do. I cant see a "internet explorer" folder in there, nor in any of the subfolders
I guess i could take a screen shot of what im looking at, but if you know what i should be looking out for my memory it would be great.

EDIT: I went ahead and took a screenshot anyway

AS you see, I have a tick box next to IE9, you do not have an entry for IE. I think that your account is corrupt. Set up a new administrator user account and see if it works any better.

Re: I have lost protocol accoiations for defualt FF.. Vista REFUSES to se FF as defau

Hi again richc46.. thanks for taking the time to help me here.
I just got back from a full admin account, and things are the same .. still vista telling me IE dosent exist, yet in other dialogues its telling me it dose exists and is default browser. Vista is also telling me that FF dosent not exist, yet in other dialogues its telling me it dose exist and is set as default browser. Its just so odd.

By the way as i was checking things in admin mode It defiantly reminded me that I had done this before (as in try the admin mode). ive tried so many thing over the year trying to fix this that i have forgotten what ive tried and what ive not tried.

Anyway thanks for the scan disc suggestion. The thing is believe it or not I actually did a full scheduled scan only last weekend, it took almost 2hrs to complete, but everything was fine. Is the link pretty much the same thing? as I really don't think i need to scan it again so soon. and It means my pc is out of action for hours too.
I must emphasises tho my vista is running extremely well, I have no other problems with it at all, and I use it quite extensively. Also my pc and system in general I take great care and pride at maintaining a clean and well oiled system.. Im fully upto date with everything, Windows updates, drivers, ...etc etc I de-fragment regularly. I do thouro scans for nasties very regularly.. Apart from this association issue there is absalutly nothing wrong with the os or my pc. This is why (apart from the fact i simply cant afford it) I feel forking out 100+ on something I already have is rather painful.

I guess there may not be a solution to this other then a fresh os, but that will mostly likely only happen when im ready to get a new pc, which wont be for the foreseeable future. Perhaps there is something in the registry that can be looked at? (as i said im not very technical so wouldn't have a clue what to even look for in there)...

Anyway for the time being im content with the association problem. I a little copy/pasting links.. drag & dropping links.. into FF never hurt anyone.
This is more of a trivial annoyance rather then a problem, never the less I thought ide try again to see if I could solve it via this forum.

Thanks for the help and time. :)

best regards

My scan may not be the same as what you did, look at my link.
In addition, if you have a CD we can make a repair installl and all should be well.

Re: I have lost protocol accoiations for defualt FF.. Vista REFUSES to se FF as defau

Heya

Sure I did check the link out and "somewhat" flashread the page, saw the 3 methods, I had just assumed it was 3 methods of doing a regular scan (as i would normally do every few months or so) .. however I now see that its slightly different. Im not sure if it`ll find anything tho, but I am willing to give it a try as long as you think there is no chance of running this then for whatever reason something goes wrong then im unable to get into windows at all, (which has happened to me in the past on more then one occasion, not with this pc or os).. Im always nervous about doing a scandisc because ive heard of lots of other stories of people doing various scans then being unable to get back into windows because the scan marked certain files as corrupt. (not sure what im talking about here really, im just concerned thats all).. I suppose its safe enough? heh..

by the way, I am running vista x64 not win7 as the link to the scan info stated.. is it still ok to run? .. i am aware that some win7 procedures are pretty much the same as on vista.

Anyway im on GMT here, its almost 1.30am and i need to get my head down for some sleep. I will however first thing tomorrow take this up again and check out the alternate scan method you suggested.

Regarding the recovery cd.. My pc (Packard bell) came with an integrated "make a backup cd" software with it, but when i ran it at the time (years ago when i first got the pc) it wouldn't run, i cant remember the reasons why. Since this issue had started about a year ago.. the recovery cd isnt available via the Packard bell site, I even emailed them a few months back enquiring about getting one sent out but never got a reply. (didn't really expect a reply either)

I had assumed to re-installed windows I would have required that cd or a fresh copy of vista, I had no idea that windows vista itself had the ability to make a recovery cd of itself. ( i seem to remember win95 upto xp had that option, but seemed to disappear on vista).. This would be fantastic .. because Ive often had a lump in my throat everytime I re-boot my pc in the knowledge that if anything went wrong and win did not boot again ide be in big trouble.

cant tell you how thankful I am at you taking the time and patients to help me.
perhaps you might be around tomorrow?
either way ill let you know how i got on with your scan.

regards

I will be around for as long at it takes or I run out of ideas. If I am not available, others will give you their thoughts. You have come to the right forum, each member here enjoys helping and wants nothing more than to fix your problem.

See you later.

EDIT: That alternate scan fixes small corruption and will give a report of all the problems that it found.

Re: I have lost protocol accoiations for defualt FF.. Vista REFUSES to se FF as defau

Hi there, well I ran this scan.. it ran for a few mins in win..
at the end it said something like resource protection found corrupt files...etc etc

so i navigated and loaded the log file, (its er.. 35+ meg.. cant post here).. and im not sure what im meant to be looking at.

As stated I had already done a full scan last week, and 2 months or so before that.. and so on for many years.. everything was reported back as ok.

By the way.. since running this new scan, is it ok to re-boot my pc.. only i did some quick research and came across a few ppl reporting on re-boot.. windows promoting for installation cds (which I dont have).

anyway.. i guess i could upload the log file, my upload is incredibility slow, so im not sure how long it will take.
I will "EDIT" this post as soon as its upoaded, but is there any possibility i can Pm you the link. The what looks like to me "jibberish" text in that log file might contain personal information from my pc what I may not want in public.. things like passwords, accounts names.. I would rather not post such a link to such a file here, Is that ok?

Im not sure if you think the log file would be any use in solving this issue tho.. i wont upload till you or someone else says it would be useful to see.

Hi Pangaea and welcome to the forums

Rich is a away at the moment, so I'll just step in for a second and hopefully we'll be able to get the log results by the time he's come back.

Hi there, well I ran this scan.. it ran for a few mins in win..
at the end it said something like resource protection found corrupt files...etc etc

That's good and bad, it means it's found something that's not quite right so we might have found the cause of your problem :) This is what we need the log for.

so i navigated and loaded the log file, (its er.. 35+ meg.. cant post here).. and im not sure what im meant to be looking at.

Yeah, it's quite a big log! But we only need a certain part of it. Fortunately for us, our master Brink has written a little script to cut out everything that we don't need from this log which should leave us with a much more manageable text file - one that can be uploaded here.

Yes, it should be fine to reboot.

anyway.. i guess i could upload the log file, my upload is incredibility slow, so im not sure how long it will take.

Don't be worried about this log. Here's an example of what we'll be left with:

In the yellow box at the top, there are a set of instructions. Please follow Option 1 - and only option 1. Once you've done this, it will generate a file on your desktop called sfcdetails.txt. Can you attach this to your next post for us please? Your only problem is with the sidebar, and it is a very common problem. It has no affect on your primary concern.

Re: I have lost protocol accoiations for defualt FF.. Vista REFUSES to se FF as defau

Hi richard,. do you mean according to my log that there is no problem other then the side bar thing you mention?
btw what sidebar?

anyway.. It occurred to me to download and install (reinstall) ie8 from ms site.. its letting me download it but it wont install, error saying there is already a more recent version installed.
I cant seem to find any other versions of ie8 on the ms site.. and i cant install ie9 since when i tried an error came up with something to the effect "cannot install due to some service pack issue"

I also did a tad of looking into this problem specificly regarding the missing ie entry listed in the enable disable win features dialog. I see some folks mention about win update installations.. as in disabling or uninstalling certain win updates that triggerd this problem.. then it occurred to me this issue as far as i can remember all started after a win update... however since its been so long now (1 year or so) i cant restore the system back to before then (even if i knew what update was the issue).
I brought up the view update history dialog, but im not really sure what im meant to be looking for or doing, but i think there seems to be a way to disable or uninstall certain specific updates, perhaps i can try disable something from there..

thanks guys again for the help

Ok, you just gave us more information than you realize.
First sidebar is nothing more than those gadgets, which most dont even use.
The important information that your supplied is in regards to SP. You must use the most current SP. Get them here.
See method 3
How to obtain the latest Windows Vista service pack
SP=Service packs. It consists of updates etc.

Re: I have lost protocol accoiations for defualt FF.. Vista REFUSES to se FF as defau

Hi there
Although i did an update around xmas (dont have auto update turned on ,,i do it manually)... i am doing it now .. and its updating a few things, however i did view the list of needed updates and nothing in reference to service pack was stated.

I am however doing the update anyway. Another thing i noted is on the site you linked me to, on Option 3.. the first step says download sp1 ? isnt that downgrading what i already have.. the sp1 is dated "March 18, 2008." .. and the sp2 link listed on that site is "May 26, 2009" .. kinda old.. are those links really the most upto date service packs? please forgive my ignorance :)'

Update just finished.. without a prompt to restart win... .. actually i am struggling to find how to bring up the Turn Windows features on or off dialog, i figured out how to do this yesterday, but for the life of me cant remember, i did a search on google and ppl are saying goto start menu / programmes/ Turn Windows features on or off ... but i dont have that in there, im also using my start bar in classic mode. argh im hopeless ;)

EDIT... well i found it, anyhow after that win update ie is still not listed in there.. also ff is still not coming up in the list of available browsers in the associate protocol dialog.
