MY Vista will stop receiving Google Chrome updates soon...

My system is Windows Vista Home Premium SP2. I have Dell studio 1737, Intel Core Duo 2, 2.10 ghz, 4g ram, and 64bit.
Should I get a new web browser and if so which one would work on this system. As soon as money allows I will be getting a new system but...

Hello Rawkfist, my suggestion would be to install Firefox; but that's easy for me to say because I already use Firefox and never used Chrome. I would think that Chrome will remain reasonably secure for some time after April if you install every update that is compatible with Vista.

Pale Moon is probably the best browser at this point.
It runs on the Goanna engine (a fork of Gecko) and looks awesome like the old Firefox did and is still customisable with most FF add-ons as well as its own ones.

Check it out: https://www.palemoon.org/
Please note that sometimes you might see mobile version renders/etc because a lot of site won't recognise the 'Goanna' string but this will be fixed in time. Mobile view sucks anyways :P

Hello DixieKongJD. Chrome refugees might want to know how well Pale Moon works with Gmail and YouTube? (Firefox is fully supported: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/6557?hl=en)

I'm having second thoughts about my previous statement that "Chrome will remain reasonably secure for some time after April," although like all good prophecy it is sufficiently vague to avoid being completely wrong. One area of concern is whether or not the PPAPI version of Flash Player can be updated manually, and how long updates will remain compatible with the Chrome version that XP and Vista users will be stuck with (Adobe is no fan of XP and Vista either). I get the impression that many average XP and Vista users intend to go on using Chrome. If anyone would care to chime in at Google Chrome Help Forum (I have done so even though I never actually used Chrome), the following URL leads to the battlefield: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topicsearchin/chrome/category$3Awindowsvista

I took IE9 out for a spin last night, tried to visit the YouTube home page and this is what I saw:

IE9 YouTube.JPG

This is a recent escalation; formerly I only got a ribbon at the top of the page to the effect that support for your browser will be ending soon. However I found that this message could be bypassed using YouTube's search engine, and that it is actually still possible to play YouTube videos using IE9. This strikes me as rather suspicious.

I just see nothing wrong with using Firefox or other Gecko-based browsers though, I might be considered a fanboy but it's because it's much more secure than Chrome because less attacks are specifically written for it now (due to Chrome's popularity).

Vista users looking for a browser to replace Chrome might feel more at home with a Chromium-based browser such as Opera, but again there is the issue of no official support from Gmail or YouTube. A few months ago I assisted someone using Opera who had a relatively minor issue with Gmail: http://www.vistax64.com/browsers-mail/304172-no-gmail-after-latest-updates.html. My search revealed that such issues are commonplace.

Vista needs continued support by Firefox to remain viable, so it might be prudent for Vista users to support Firefox.

I use YouTube without issue. I've seen many issues for GMail address. Best to chack out their forums, since I don't use GMail. I think the short answer though is a definite "Yes"

Welcome back to Vista Forums quinncy, and thank you for bringing the situation with Opera 36 and 37 to our attention. Sounds like even more bad news for Vista users, although Opera 36 will at least still be supported (unlike Chrome). This appears to be the official announcement: Initial Opera developer 37 release – Opera Desktop - Opera Software.

Well I have been perfectly happy with plain vanilla Firefox - but a year ago I was still using IE 9 exclusively, so perhaps I'm not that hard to please. I have lately been reading about Pale Moon, the Firefox fork that has been advocated by a few forum members in this thread and elsewhere. One thing in particular that strikes me as remarkable: Pale Moon is the only software product I know of that has ended support for XP without also ending support for Vista at the same time (Hurray!): https://www.palemoon.org/PM_end_of_WinXP_support.shtml. I especially like this quote: "Being able to use more modern (Vista and later) windows kernel functions improves stability and overall performance of the browser." At last, a developer who acknowledges that Vista is not XP's younger brother, but rather Win7's older brother, instead of just tossing out Vista with the XP bathwater because Vista's user base is small. Before long I will have to give Pale Moon a try!

I never heard of pal moon browser , gonna have to check that one out . Now a days their are so many web browsers to use it's hard to decide what's the best one. I liked Chromodo because the menu options looked just like Google Chrome ...

@Vistaar: That's true, and yeah it just shows there are developers/companies that make some sense even now. It's silly to discontinue a 2006 OS with a 2001 OS, though of course, it just seems no developer has bothered to do that except Moonchild.

@Cammygirl192 and other Pale Moon users: Does CCleaner Free work well with Pale Moon, or would one also need CCEnhancer? Have you ever had Firefox and Pale Moon installed at the same time, and are there problems with that?

I have both installed on my laptop, no conflicts with either installation or running at same time.

I don't use the CCleaner type of programs, I let Sandboxie erase any temporary browsing files and traces.
