Problems with Vista, Winsock (i think) and Firefox

Hi there.
I'm new to this site, but you'll start seeing a lot to me seeing how I'm new to the whole x64-experience..

I'm running Vista Ultimate x64 OEM without any issues, until now.
Yesterday my computer was running just fine, but now, all of the sudden, it seems like it doesnt want to cooperate.

Here's a small list of thumbnails to make telling my story a whole lot easier:

1) On startup - nothing appears out of the ordinary..

2) Starting firefox results in nothing but a blank page.

3) Closing firefox results in error.

4) Opening up Binary Newsreader = errors.

5) Closing Binary Newsreader = more errors.

6) Opening FTP app results in similar errors.

So my question to you, wise and noble users of Vistax64.com - what can I do to resolve these problems?

As mentioned earlier, I had *no* issues with my system yesterday.

System specs:

Core2Duo E6600 @ 2.4 GHz
XFX GeForce 8800 GTS-X
2048 MB DDR2 Ram

Running on Vista Ultimate OEM, 64-bit

If it was working a day earlier... try a restore...

If not.. remove firefox.. DELETE The folder.. run crap cleaner and install again...

There shouldn't be any issues.. if oyu have installed ANY programs since yesterday.. remove them...

Have you tried navigation to other pages using firefox? do you have vista x64?

hi guys,

I also have the same problem.
Everything was working fine until today.
I only can run IE-64 bit.
Firefox and IE-32 bit will crash.

Im using OEM as well.

Could it be one of the patch causing the problem?
Anyone know how to fix this?

Hi Shippou82,

I do not know about Firefox. For IE7, it is probably a add-on that is causing the problem.

Try this,
1. Open Control Panel (Classic View).
2. Click on Internet Options icon.
3. Click on the Advanced tab.
4. Click the Reset button.
NOTE: This will disable all add-ons and reset IE7 settings back to default.
5. Click Ok to the confirmation prompt.
6. Click Ok.

Now just enable the add-ons one by one until you find the culprit and disable it again and uninstall it.

Same as above, but click Programs tab (Step 3) and Manage add-ons button instead.

Same thing with firefox.. go to the firefox directory and delete everything in the plugins directory... If you have a profile made... delete the profile also ...

you can start firefox's profile by cmd firefox -manageprofile

I think its that one... Create a new profile and it should work fine.

Shippou82,

It sounds like you may have a few more problems other than IE7. Make sure that you have the latest drivers and BIOS, then backup any important data you do not want to loose just in case. Now, run a "Upgrade" Vista installation from within you current Vista. This will act like a repair install. Your installed programs should remain intact. Your old Vista will be in a hidden C:\Windows.old folder. You can delete it when everything is set backup the way you like it.

well what did you do to fix this shippou? I HAD the exact problem you see.. but mine switched over to become another problem after some restarting and driver reinstalls.. Now my problem is that windows freezes completely after a few minutes after restarting.. and if i try to start windows update or some similar program it freezes those windows instantly, but not explorer firefox and other programs like that untill a bit later... Ive tried disabling my network adapters soundcard and removeing scsi\raid drivers etc... I have evga n680i and geforce 8800, with all the latest drivers and the 2nd latest bios... But the strange thing is that I had not altered anything hardware related anyways before i got the first problems with the 32 bit programs...

If i start in safemode with networking everything works fine.. but there i cant do an upgrade vista.. for that i have to be in normal boot wich freezes before i can install anything useful at all

Im going to turn on UAC again just to see if that helps in some way.. this seems like virus behaviour to me.. but i dunno seeing i didnt do anything prior to the problem and Im careful with malware anyways

My Computer

I fixed them with these step (got it from one of the thread here but forgot which one)

1. Click Start , type cmd in the Start Search text box, and then
press ENTER. -
(the CMD must run as administrator)
2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
netsh winsock reset
3. Restart the computer.
