hey all less than 3 years left for vista then what do we do.

yes i have windows 7 and it is ok. don't really know that much about windows 8, only tried the preview. as for myself i have always liked and have had very few issues with vista and are still going to use it until it wears out. for what i do it works fine, i do wish that we could get internet explorer 11 but since we can't their are other browser choices. just want to know what others may do.

When support ends for Vista, your computer will still work. The only thing that will happen is that you no longer get updates from Microsoft and other software manufacturers may begin to stop supporting the software that is exclusively for Vista. When support for security ends (4/17), you run the risk of malware, virus and hackers having easier access to your computer. You can use 7 or 8. Seven, of course, is beginning to age and support will end in 1920, for security.

yeah it sucks that all things have to change. guess it will be the same as when windows xp ended. hopefully windows 9 will be better than windows 8. guess we will see when it comes around. anyway all good things seem to have to end and 2017 isn't very far away.

1920 ??? Does that mean Vista will go out with a "roar"? Microsoft will be doing the Charleston when support ends :P

Right now I'm testing out the Windows 8.1 Enterprise Eval Edition in a VM session. It's actually VERY stable. I prefer it to Windows 7 quite frankly. I just wonder if there is a hack that will allow Windows Mail and Windows Calendar on Vista to run under Windows 8.1? I know it can on Windows 7.

I will be honest though, I do prefer Vista to 8.1 so far. But at least I have an upgrade path though come 2017. Also I will test Windows 9 (Threshold Preview) and see what that offers.

yeah i guess microsoft will be glad when vista ends. i just like it because alot of people hate it or seem to. i think alot of them are arm chair testers though.

hey all, i remember when windows xp was released and how many problems that it had at 1st. i think that we may have forgotten that. when i 1st got windows vista i don't recall having any problems with it like some people had. all of my desktop computers were home built and didn't seem to suffer with resource and hardware issues. i was never a gamer but i had good graphics cards and lots of ram also fast processors and built them for windows vista. i did know some that had laptops and they just didn't want to run windows vista and they also seemed to have wireless connection issues. as the service packs were released and hardware manufactures started updating their drivers that all seemed to go away for most. never noticed any real differences between vista or seven from a speed point of view and they both do pretty much the same things for my use. i think as with all new operating systems at 1st they all have some issues that do get fixed pretty fast. i also think most of us hate new changes and really hate making them,i know that i do sometimes. i always thought vista was good and hate to see it go. thats all

Nope! I definitely remember how poor XP was at the start. I will say it was a faster OS prior to SP2, but much less secure in the important areas of Internet Explorer, WiFi implementation and Windows Firewall. SP2 improved these, and hardware eventually caught up. The RTM and SP1 a/b would run on a PIII 800 MHz and 512 MHz of RAM without issue. Not so much after SP2.

I ordered a notebook PC from Dell for my boss at the time (I think it had either 512 mb or 1 gb of RAM on it), and it had the all new Windows Vista on it. Even in classic mode it ran slowwwww. Really bad.

That's why you never had problems; because you built your machines with enough horsepower for Vista. But were they typical machines of that era? Even still, file I/O access was far from exemplary and a lot of the original WDM drivers were buggy.

However, I would say that SP1 and SP2 especially has resolved all of those issues. Today with 4 gb of RAM and a good processor, Vista should run just as well as Windows 7. I have seen Windows 7 and 8 run better in less than 2 gb of RAM than Vista ever could however.

I am a fellow Vista user. Think of it this way. We still have more than two and a half years to run it with supported updates.

yes my desktops were built from that era but they were vista ready and the motherboard driver cd had both vista and xp drivers.

i have though put vista on several computers built for xp which had pentium 4 processors 3gig and above both socket types and 3gb ddr/ddr2 ram and a decent graphics card and they ran really well for basic web surfing and video streaming. all drivers for those were found through windows updates.

i agree you do need to have horsepower for vista to run smooth. i guess i have been lucky enough to have piece together computers that could run vista without any issues.

yup i agree on the two and a half years left and plan on running it till then. still hate to see it go,however it did pave the way for windows 7.
