Our 2007 Gateway Vista laptop is still running well. Our 2008 HP laptop died recently - mobo problems. So did our 2008 HP desktop. Both had bleeding capacitors.

I'm running a Packard Bell iMedia s3210 which was bought in 2008, and stored from 2014-last week, and nothing is wrong with it. :)
I bet new PCs will last only 3-4 years in the future.

Anyway isn't Packard Bell = Gateway?

Welcome to the forums DixieKongJD, we could use a new infusion of enthusiasm around here! Yes, Packard Bell and Gateway were both acquired by Acer around the same time.

I think you should reconsider your aversion to SP2 expressed in another post. Vista with SP2 will be supported until 2017, whereas Vista without SP2 has been unsupported by Microsoft since 2011. Much software that still supports Vista assumes that SP2 is installed, and it's a prerequisite for IE 9 (which is admittedly obsolescent).

The only reason I don't want to upgrade is because I don't want to be forced to install Windows Search, but I don't know if you can opt out of that.
Thanks for the welcome too :)

i think it all depends on the quality of components used by manufactures as to the life of a desktop and also if the user runs a UPS / BATTERY BACKUP or uses a surge protector. a UPS / BATTERY BACKUP will give better protection than a surge protector.

i put back into service an hp-m7267c desktop / intel pentium d 950 3.4 ghz 800 mhz fsb 4mb L2 cache / 4.0 gb ddr2 ram / nvidia gt 9400 pcie gaphics card / 250 gb hard drive. this desktop came out in 09/2006. i dual booted on one hard drive windows 7 32 bit and also linux ubuntu 14.04 LTS and it runs great. i pulled this desktop from a big trash day pile without any case so i had to find some side case covers and zip tied them to it it still has no front but that is ok. all it needed was a new processor fan which i had in my PC stash. i can't believe that people will do such things. some people really believe that it is a disposable world.

Just reactivate my 8 years old Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop, which bought in Dec 2007. After Vista support ended next year i will probably install linux os to continue using it.

Currently running W10 32 bit on my 2006 Acer 9301 laptop. Its basically fine if a little 'disk thrashy' at times...... I used a W8.1 license to get the free upgrade and used my OEM W7 pro license to get W10 pro for my main PC.

Also have a Vista image of just Vista plus SP1 and SP2 and updates, current to around 12 months ago. That can be restored and rebuilt at any time.
