It's funny when I find a program...

... that supposedly isn't compatible with Vista, apply a fake version with DXWnd to convince the installer that I'm running Windows 7 or newer, and then the program ends up working flawlessly.

It's because people don't want to support Vista even though 7 is the exact same as Vista.
honestly 7 should just have been a service pack for vista

Seven was Vista but with a lot of the good bits (file/folder customisation) removed. Small glitches in Vista (that should have been fixed with updates) simply had that feature disabled/removed in Seven. I never rated W7 at all.

The only program I'm using that isn't rated for Vista is Adobe Reader XI. No special installation method required, but I have to apply update patches manually. I wasn't a pioneer of this, in fact we have a sticky thread: http://www.vistax64.com/software/68875-latest-version-adobe-reader.html. (Of course Sumatra PDF reader still supports Vista, and Firefox has built-in PDF capability.)

I downgraded (or should I say upgraded) to Vista Home SP2 over 7 SP1 and I have slightly better performance, and battery life, funny enough.
My computer's battery is really bad too.

Plus I get Windows Mail, Calendar, Movie Maker and Contacts

It's nice to see I'm not the only one who is still hanging on to Vista. :D
It's definitely the most underrated operating system of all time.

A few years ago, I too used Windows 7, and I had no idea what I was missing out on until one day I decided to try Windows Vista in a VM just for fun.

Not too long after that, I "downgraded" to Windows Vista on my actual hardware, and it's probably one of the best choices I have ever made. It's never really given me any problems, and I'm still discovering many of the awesome features it has to offer that later Windows releases simply do not.

I have tried Windows 7, 8, and Windows 10 on the same computer I run Vista on, and they've never been able to live up to it.

I use foxit reader but an earlier version without the bloat for .pdf files

Of course I already knew that since we have discussed it before. I also know that Foxit Reader no longer supports Vista.

Might not be listed as supporting Vista but still works just as well as it always did.

Are you saying that Foxit Reader 8.0 still works well on Vista despite its system requirements listing nothing older than Windows 7? That would certainly be interesting to me - but I thought you were using Foxit Reader 3.1? I only mentioned Adobe Reader XI because it is a program that works well on Vista despite the fact that it never officially supported Vista. (I am using 11.0.16, released May 10.) I believe that Foxit Reader is a program that formerly supported Vista but no longer does, of which there are many. Granted, if those running Vista don't mind using versions that are several years old, then their software options are virtually unlimited.

I use 3.1.2.1013 and Vista 32bit with no problems.
I have tried later versions but always go back to this version as it does all I need without too much bloat.
This is a little over 8Mb and a bit bigger than the 2.2Mb Foxit was when it first came out.
At the same time Foxit was 2.2Mb Adobe Reader was just over 22Mb.
I don't know what Adobe Reader is now as I have never used it, but I expect it is a lot bigger.

Was there any specific program that you would care to mention?

Yes, recently I found a browser called Liebao (Chinese for "Cheetah") that refused to install until I used DxWnd to convince it that I was running Windows 8. I've been using it ever since, and everything has been working great.

I believe this has worked on several different occasions, but this browser is the only one that comes to mind at the moment.

GitHub is a good example.
I couldn't find a good client for GH, and GH Desktop is apparently only supposed to support Windows 7 and up.

This computer (which I got back 3 days ago), does run GitHub, on Vista SP2, absolutely fine! I find it hilarious...
