Blue Screen (of Doom).

Hello Forum Techies,

My little gaming rig, after a year of good use, had it's hard drive roll over and die. After getting it replaced and spending days downloading and reinstalling my games, programs and wares, I now seem to be plagued with "Blue Screen" errors. It happens most often while gaming, usually 45 minutes to an hour into play. I'm not sure if this is a symptom or coincidence as the desktop doesn't seem to have any issue being on for hours running scan's, web surfing, or just idling.

I've spent the better part of a week trying to troubleshoot and fix this but my meager technical skills are at their wits end.

Hello !! Welcome to SF !!

I guess the problem is with netr6164.sys I believe it's your Ralink RT2561 & RT2661 series Wireless LAN Card. So i would recommend to uninstall the Drivers completely and reinstall it with a fresh download.

Here is the List of Drivers. Locate the old one that is 2008 and below and update them if possible

My Computer

Thank You Capt.Jack,
I was so worried it might have been because of the new hard drive. I do have a Ralink RT61 Turbo Wireless LAN Card and a Belkin 54g Wireless USB Network Adapter.

I got the Ralink with my gaming rig but because of some hiccups (Vista 64 + MMO's + Ralink = Disconnects Frequently), I ended up just going back to my Belkin at the time. When I got the new hard drive, windows automatically updated the Ralink but I just sort of... um... dismissed it. :o

I uninstalled the drivers and found the old Rosewill installation disk (that I had originally used before just disabling it originally.)

Here is the List of Drivers. Locate the old one that is 2008 and below and update them if possible

Please forgive my ignorance, I just want to be thorough. All of those in the list dated 2008 and older I should attempt to delete and find fresh files of? Or does the simple reinstall/uninstall of the Ralink suffice?

My Computer

The Ralink is what the dmp pointed to, but if you can find updated drivers for other hardware, go for it. You may find Driver Easy to be a help.

You may not be able to update all drivers past 2008, as you are using Vista. In Windows 7, every driver should be 2009 or later, but the same is not true for Vista.

Hello,

Just reinstall the Ralink Drivers and see if that fixes it. Only if you have further problems it advisable to update the Drivers. Don't delete them. Just google them find the manufacturer and go to their website and update it. Here is a link to find them easily Driver Reference and here is a description in how to update the Drivers Drivers and Downloads

Hope this helps,
Captain

Edit: JK it didn't see your replay ... Thanks for posting !!

^^ Thanks guys, I really do appreciate your time in this matter.

Unfortunately, after the install it Blue Screened on me while playing later that evening (always after 45 minutes or more of gaming) so I updated the drivers and it Blue Screened on me again tonight but the BCCode changed to "d1", so is this indicative of the same issue of the Ralink or has it evolved? Guess it is time to start going thorough that long list.

Hello GryphonStalker,
This is the result of your bugcheck.

STOP 0x000000D1: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Usual causes: Device driver.

The driver in question is usbohci.sys

The process OHCI USB Miniport Driver belongs to the software Microsoft USB Open Host Controller Miniport Driver by Microsoft Corporation (Microsoft Corporation).

I would replace this driver.

Have you run Memtest ?, download and run overnight, about six or seven passes.

I know you have a new HDD, but just to be sure its not a dud, check it anyway.

Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

Can you confirm you have all the Windows updates and service packs.

If anything is overclocked, set it to default.

Although the dump file points to a driver, i get the feeling there is an underlying problem causing this.

Carry out the diagnostics and post your results, good luck.

I would replace this driver.

I am having difficultly figuring out "how to" replace this driver (Google has been unusually unhelpful). From my understanding it isn't just something I can download from Microsoft (or at least I can't find it). From other forums I've read it was mentioned that one should run the System File Checker in safe mode with the Vista Disk (but mine is service pack 1) in the drive but per usual SFC says everything is hunky-dory.

I have another possible source but since I'm not sure if it would make more knowledgeable techies cringe I'll run it by you guys first. My husband's laptop also uses Vista Home 64-bit, and lo and behold I have said file sitting on my thumb drive. Of course I can't overwrite the file because the folder is protected, but I've found a way around that too.

Have you run Memtest?

Just did one pass and everything came back fine, but I'll certainly test this further as well. :)

http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

I was using Western Digital's Tool and everything came back normal but I'll try this one as well.

Can you confirm you have all the Windows updates and service packs.

Yup, service pack 2 and the Window's Updater claims I have nothing else to download.

If anything is overclocked, set it to default.

Nope, nothing overclocked.

Hello !!

I believe it might get that message if the update is already applied on your System. Run SFC it would repair the rouge Drivers. Stop error when you put a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 to sleep or into hibernation, or when you restart the computer: "0x9F" this some seems to be little more update.

If you still have BSOD then follow this article and enable the Driver Verified and let it run for atleast 36 hours. Using Driver Verifier to identify issues with Drivers - Windows 7 Forums

Hope this helps,
Captain

If you have the Vista disk, you can take the file you need from the disk.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/261616-extract-files-vista-installation-dvd.html

That was easy enough to follow, Thank You! :)

  • So I replaced the file with the one on the disk.
  • Then ran my Hard Drive Tool and it Passed Quick Test and Passed Extended Test (I also have S.M.A.R.T enabled at start up if that matters).
  • Blue screened! 30 minutes into playing.
  • Ran Memtest86+ over night and these were my results -

The dump file was the same as the previous one.

Remove all your ram sticks and just put one in, (slot #1), try the machine, if all goes well try the other stick, and so on, until all the ram has been tried .
With the errors showing up in Memtest, its looking like it may be ram.
