hello all,

i have a Dell Inspiron 1525 notebook PC and during Windows startup, it goes into "Startup Repair" with the error "Windows cannot repair this computer automatically". following is the problem details:

i have tried F8 to invoke Safe Mode boot options and tried all 3 safe modes. but still returned to the "Startup Repair". i also tried the option "Last Known Good Configuration (advanced)" several times but no use.

i have created a Knoppix v6.2.1 bootable DVD and started up through the CD-ROM drive to access my harddisk. it appears my file structure is ok and i copied/backup/retrieved as much files and file directories to an external USB drive (through Knoppix operating system). i can see that my User Profile is still there so i do not want to re-install the entire Windows Vista o/s again.

from System Recovery Options, i can enter Command Prompt and tried these actions:
bootrec /RebuildBCD
bootrec /FixMbr
bootrec /FixBoot
however the "Total identified Windows installation: 0" and problem still persists ........

next, i inserted the Dell reinstallation DVD for Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit. this bootup through CD-ROM drive also entered "Startup Repair" with similar error details as above, i.e. Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically. the Dell reinstallation DVD provide an additional option for "Dell Factory Image Restore" and since my notebook was bought in May 2008, i understand that doing this image restore will erase all my personal files and User Profile.

please help!!!! what else can i do to fix my notebook? i have read similar threads going back to 2008 but did not see a solution.

regards,
boon

i am now researching on where to find the files and folders containing personalized settings:
http://www.optimizingpc.com/install/backupdata.html
http://www.vistax64.com/general-discussion/247411-application-data-settings-backup.html

i am also trying to find out if it is better to purchase a Windows 7 package and fresh install with Windows 7 instead of staying with this Vista that will potentially give problems again as so many on this forums have encountered .......

i still have not found solution to the Startup Repair problem :-(

right now i cannot even startup the Vista. So are you saying i can use the bootable Windows7 installation DVD and and then recover my files using the EasyTransfer tool? before installing Windows7?

i am trying to stay on track with my original problem query ..... so that hopefully someone sees this thread and help me resolve the "Startup Repair" issue over the next few days.

please help, anyone!!

I have seen members with problems similar to yours. The method suggested is this, but I do not have much experience with that OS. The easy transfer would be difficult if you cannot get access.

highly recommend to create a Knoppix v6.2.1 bootable DVD and start up through the CD-ROM drive to access your harddisk. once booted through CD-ROM drive, plug in a USB external harddisk and copy out those personal files or photos ..... before attempting to fix the Vista problem. last thing you want to do is accidental reformat/re-install and you lose all your recent data.
