ndis.sys corrupt or missing

Not sure if this correct forum. Brother in-law asked me to clean a virus off of his laptop. Gateway M-series with vista OS. Started laptop and popups started like crazy. Shut laptop down
and started in safe mode, copied Malwarebyte anti-malware to it and ran 2 full scans. Booted laptop back
into normal mode and ran another full scan clean, everything seemed good. Noticed windows update was trying
to run, so I connected laptop to my wireless connection. Windows vista SP1 update started to run so I let
it go overnite. I awoke to find laptop will not start in normal or safe mode.
Corrupt or missing file c:\windows\system32\drivers\ndis.sys
status: 0xc0000221
Not sure what to do now.

For OEM version,
Go to advanced options menu (f8) before it boots into Windows. Then select Startup Repair. Follow the on-screen instructions and select Startup Rrepair; if necessary, do command prompt and type c: (where c is your windows vista disk) and then type chkdsk /f

For Retail Version,
Insert your Windows Installation Disc, press any key when prompted. If it doesn't, make sure internal optical drive or cd/dvd drive is first for boot order/priority. Follow the on-screen instructions and select startup repair. If necessary, do chkdsk on command prompt.

OEM Version - Operating System Pre-Installed on Computer
Retail Version - Installed from Disc

Brother in law is unclear where he might have any discs for laptop. From website
neosmart.net I downloaded 2 disc iso images. Vista recovery disc 32 bit and a 64 bit
image.( I am not certain what this laptop is 32 or 64) Upon booting laptop display
shows to hit f10 for boot options. Booted from cd (32 bit)
Window comes up for installing vista or repairing vista.
I selected repair and it then shows me system recovery option where I select the
vista OS and reply "Next".
Startup Repair shows it is searching for problems for several minutes.
This fails and says "startup repair cannot repair the computer automatically"
Problem details show a few things. Problem Signature 05: corruptFile 06: noboot failure
Tried Selecting system restore from recovery tools but fails due to " no restore points"
Brought up the command prompt and ran chkdsk c: /f and no problems were found.

Tried to boot windows normally and got the same error.
"Windows failed to load because a critical system driver is missing or corrupt"
\windows\system32\drivers\ndis.sys

Does it say anything similar to this?
View advanced options for system recovery and support

If so, click it and follow these methods.

Method 1
Click System Restore and restore it BEFORE the problem occurred. It will not affect your personal files. May take a while, but be patient. It is a great feature if there is a problem with Vista. If this method fails to fix the problem, use Method 2.

Method 2
Click Command Prompt, from there. Try...

c: or x: then type chkdsk /f
c: or x: then type sfc /scannow

I do see "View advanced options for system recovery and support"

But when I try system restore it tells me if fails due to " no restore points"

Ran c: chkdsk /f it completes without getting an error.

Currently c: sfc /scannow is running although it appears nothing is happening.
I guess I started 30 minutes ago and it just says this process could take some time.

anything else I could do ?

My Computer

reentered the command " sfc /scannow" then got the following message:

"Windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation"

Is there anything else I can try ?

My Computer

Brought up the system repair menu again and started the command prompt.
Copied file \windows\system32\drivers\ndis.sys from X: (cd) to the c: drive
Booted and another file came up missing or corrupt... In all I copied 4 files in this way.
ndis.sys , netio.sys , tcpip.sys & fwpkclnt.sys . Then laptop came up.
Now I am back trying to remove malware "Antivirus 2010 & Koobface"
Files " us?rinit.exe & Andy128.exe" seem to get removed with malwarebytes but
I am not so sure.
