Blue screen crashes

Hi,

My laptop has been crashing for past year on and off... however now it seems to be crashing on a daily basis when I am doing nothing but browsing the internet.

When it started I thought it was just over heating and got a cooling pad , that solved the problem for a few months, then it starting crashing again because "an attempt to reset the display driver failed", I lowered my resolution, turned off most of the graphics and updated the display driver.

Now it is crashing because of BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER and a file system error

I am a complete noob and have no idea what this means I would be grateful for any help

oh and here are the details of the crashes that I got from bluescreenview

thanks again for any help!!!! :)

My Computer

perfmon suggests that there's a problem with your Cyberlink service. Please uninstall the program that it belongs to (most likely HP Quick Play).

systeminfo.txt shows that you don't have SP2 installed.
Please update your drivers from the PC Manufacturer's website (or the motherboard manufacturer's website if it's a custom build).
Scan for malware
Then visit Windows Update and get SP2 and all subsequent updates.

It's going to take a while for all 39 dump reports to run, so I'll post back when they're done.
From what I've seen so far, this is most likely a hardware problem.
Please run these free diagnostics as time permits:
H/W Diagnostics:
Please start by running these bootable hardware diagnostics:
Memory Diagnostics (read the details at the link)
HD Diagnostic (read the details at the link)

Also, please run one of these free, independent online malware scans to ensure that your current protection hasn't been compromised: Malware (read the details at the link)

Then, if the above tests pass, I'd try these free stress tests:
FurMark download site: FurMark: VGA Stress Test, Graphics Card and GPU Stability Test, OpenGL Benchmark and GPU Temperature | oZone3D.Net
FurMark Setup:
- If you have more than one GPU, select Multi-GPU during setup
- In the Run mode box, select "Stability Test" and "Log GPU Temperature"
Click "Go" to start the test
- Run the test until the GPU temperature maxes out - or until you start having problems (whichever comes first).
- Click "Quit" to exit
Prime95 download site: Free Software - GIMPS
Prime95 Setup:
- extract the contents of the zip file to a location of your choice
- double click on the executable file
- select "Just stress testing"
- select the "Blend" test. If you've already run MemTest overnight you may want to run the "Small FFTs" test instead. (run all 3 if you find a problem and note how long it takes to error out with each)
- "Number of torture test threads to run" should equal the number of CPU's times 2 (if you're using hyperthreading).
The easiest way to figure this out is to go to Task Manager...Performance tab - and see the number of boxes under CPU Usage History
Then run the test for 6 to 24 hours - or until you get errors (whichever comes first).
This won't necessarily crash the system - but check the output in the test window for errors.
The Test selection box and the stress.txt file describes what components that the program stresses.
Two other video stress tests (may be more stressful than FurMark):
Video Memory stress Test - МИРNVIDIA / Утилиты / VMT
Artifact Locator - МИРNVIDIA / Утилиты / Artifact Locator
Sorry, but I don't read the language that this website is made in.

39 memory dumps since 11 Jan 2010

My Computer

39 memory dumps since 11 Jan 2010
6 different BSOD error codes
5 different causes blamed

18 are video related
7 are storage related
10 are related to your BitDefender (oldest errors)

Please run the diagnostics from above and we'll see what they have to say.

Also, please remove or update these older drivers that were loaded at the time of the crash. Don't use Windows Update or the Update drivers function of Device Manager.
Please use the following instructions to locate the most currently available drivers to replace the one's that you uninstall OR remove:
How To Find Drivers:
- I have listed links to most of the drivers in the code box below. Please use the links there to see what info I've found about those drivers.
- search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.
- - The most common drivers are listed on this page: Driver Reference
- - Driver manufacturer links are on this page: http://www.carrona.org/drvrdown.html

Here's the older drivers (You can look them up here: Driver Reference ).
Please pay particular attention to any dated 2008 or earlier:

My Computer

Thanks for the advice
So far I've removed HP Quick play and installed SP2.

I ran the Memory Diagnostic test for 7 passes all with no error.

The HD Diagnostic just ended and gave me a message that my dipostition code was 0x00 (?????)

The FurMark Test.... I wasn't sure how long to leave it running .... I know in your reply it said to more or less leave it until something goes wrong, but the temperature rose from 54 to 73 and pretty much stayed at 73 for about 30 minutes.
Let me know if you need me to run it again .

Prime95 ran for 8 hours with no errors

I'll try to update the drivers next....

My Computer

This driver concerns me: 349557b9.sys
Can you locate it in C:\Windows\System32\drivers?
If so:
- please right click on it and select Properties, then select the Details tab and see if that gives any clue as to the maker.
- go to the free Jotti's malware scan and submit the driver for scanning there.

My Computer

That's OK. If you have time, search the entire computer for it. Sometimes "non-standard" drivers launch from different places - so it may be elsewhere on the system. I checked the MSINFO32 report and the last memory dump and that driver isn't there - so I wouldn't spend a lot of time looking for it.

Continue updating the drivers and let us known if you get another BSOD. If you do, please zip it up and upload it with your next post.

My Computer

Thanks usasma. Well everything has been running fine so far, no BSOD but my laptop freezes up when Bitdefender is doing... anything.... so I may uninstall it.
The only other problem I have had is that since updating the Realtek HD Audio Codec Driver the audio has problems switching from headphones to the speakers.
Do you have nay advice or should I ask for help in another forum about this?
:)

My Computer

There is a RollBack feature in Drivers tab of the device properties in Device Manager.
Give that a try.

As for the BitDefender:
Anti-Virus Removal:
Please do the following:
- download a free antivirus for testing purposes: Free AntiVirus
- uninstall the BitDefender from your system (you can reinstall it, if so desired, when we're done troubleshooting)
- remove any remnants of BitDefender using this free tool: How to uninstall BitDefender
- IMMEDIATELY install and update the free antivirus
- check to see if this fixes the BSOD's

My Computer

ok so there was another crash :( .
wasn't doing anything at that time, I had left it on and when I came back it had restarted and there was a notification that there was an unexpected shutdown.
I have zipped up the files and attached them.

My Computer

The dump file blames bthusb.sys - a Windows file that works with the USB ports.
It's not likely that there's a problem with a Windows file - so we start with other drivers that are associated with your USB ports.

You have very little free memory, which probably makes your system run very, very slowly. I would suggest that you use Autoruns to eliminate some of the unnecessary startup items.

What do you have connected to your USB ports?
Do you have a webcam, media card reader, fingerprint reader, or other built in device?
For example, there is a MagicJack loading in your startups.

Also, please remove or update these older drivers that were loaded at the time of the crash (please note that many of them were included in my last BSOD analysis).

What do you have connected to your USB ports?
Do you have a webcam, media card reader, fingerprint reader, or other built in device?
For example, there is a MagicJack loading in your startups.

The only thing that is always connected to a USB port is the cooling pad, which just draws power. I also have a built in webcam and fingerprint reader (that I never use.) The magic jack was not connected at the time of the crash though.....

My Computer

It doesn't matter if it's connected or not - Windows loads it's driver "just in case" it's needed.

Please download fresh copies of the drivers for the Bluetooth, webcam, MagicJack and fingerprint reader.
Also download a fresh set of chipset drivers (for the USB port drivers).
Then uninstall the current drivers for the above devices.
Then install the freshly downloaded drivers
Then monitor for further BSOD's
