Windows installer problems/Icon issues

To start off none of this happened before my last windows update.

Would like to add that I was looking thru program files with protected opering files displayed and I went thru Installshield installation and it seemed to have less files than it should of particularly in regards to adobe and apple. I never ever touched that one and would it be possible that a virus got its claws in there and when i did a scan it found a virus or two, is it possible that it deleted that files along with the virus?

For some reason I there are some programs I can't remove, and trying to reinstall them doesn't do it. The two in particular are adobe and apples. Now, I went thru and deleted as many of the "physical" folders for these in program files and program data, and eventually, some of them got deleted from my list of program in programs and features but there are some that I still cant get rid of. For instance when I try and reinstall adobe reader it tells me that the program is already installed when as far as I can see, it's not. But it still shows version 9.3.3 in my installer window.

Also, I the window with the message The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.

After I close that it pops up with the window with a red x that says:
The installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the source exists and that you can access it.

The problem is, it does, and I tryed to get rid of it, but no matter what i did I couldn't get rid of it.

And the culprits are:
Adobe Reader 9.3.3
Apple Application Support
Apple Software Update
Quicktime
All white icons.

I got rid of as many of the directories as I could.

The funny thing is, is that before my last windows up date this never happened. Never.

And one more thing, when I try to look up repair or fix windows installer it never brings up anything usefull. It always brings up how to uninstall microsoft office since the registry fixer upper thingy that microsoft offered is kaput. But of course this has nothing to do with microsoft office.
Oh, well, on second thought, my icons got all messed up after the last update too. I've done about all ten methods I could find. They went from non functional to functional but not displaying correctly.

So basically, I've done every thing, about 10 different things to get my icons back to normal, and I deleted all the junk files to clear up my computer.

Any ideas?

Good morning!

Your post slightly confused me. It seemed to lead off on a few tangents. I know about a something which may be what you are after. Please read the below, and answer this question: Do you think it applies, or do you think that your problem is different, and would like us to help with that? If uncertain, we shall do some digging for you!

It was documented as a bug, but only because we were not sure whether it was a bug, an update, a program, or a virus. If it does apply to you, then maybe you would have your name stuck next to possible update issue :)

Hello all!

I find Windows Vista to be very stable, but can I please alert you all to a rare Vista bug that I commonly see mis-diagnosed on this or any forum. This bug crops up in a post about once a month on this forum. I believe that everyone here should be able to recognise it, and be able to offer advice. Unfortunately, the only resilient solution is a Clean Install, although most users who experience the symptoms will accept this verdict.

Here are the symptoms that a user will detect:

  • No shortcut icons show
  • No shortcuts work (The item '{name}' has been changed or moved. Do you want to delete this shortcut? )
  • Almost no application run. The issue will be Windows Installer configuring the product, and then asking for the location of the .exe or .tmp. Neither of the locations found are correct. In fact, the file no longer exists on the computer, although read on for the cause
  • However, if one re-installs a program, the shortcut for that program works correctly forever, and the program opens normally.
  • All of this occurs overnight. Switch on in the morning, and all is not well! Not well at all!
Please be very aware of this! It sticks out like a sore thumb! Please try and remember this post whenever this issue next appears!

The Cause:

The root cause is not known, but the cause of the symptoms are. The issue is that the %WinDir%\Installer\ folder has been emptied. Completely emptied!

This folder stores shortcut icons, .exe and .dll icon holders, and shortcut information. This is why shortcuts no longer work.

This folder also stores all installers for all applications. This explains why any program has a Windows Installer configuration bar, and then asks for the location - the location no longer exists. The files and folders in this folder have been completely deleted. They are not in the Recycle Bin, and recovery of them is impossible.

If you re-install a program, it puts stuff into the %WinDir%\Installer folder - repopulating it. This is why all reinstalled programs work. Can I make it crystal clear! This folder empties once. It does not keep emptying. Anything put into this folder after the incident remains.

As I said above, the root cause of this emptying is un-known.

How to confirm this problem:

Get the user to check their %WinDir%\Installer folder (usually C:\Windows\Installer) and see what is inside. Please remember that this folder:

  • Is a System Folder, and Hidden, so you will need a speech similar to the following: Please use OPTION TWO, steps 1, 2, 4 and 6 of this tutorial:Hidden Files and Folders

  • Will re-generate a few things, and the user will probably have re-installed something, so don't expect no items, expect few items. Have few is few? On a normal system, re-installed about 1-2 months ago, you will probably get a total of about 250 files and folders in this folder. A little more or a little less means nothing, but less than 100 probably means trouble, but is just about possible. Use common sense. 10-50 is pretty certainly trouble.
The Fix:

Unfortunately, there is no specific fix. Programs can be re-installed, all shortcuts deleted (and remember that this includes All Programs) and eventually the system will be back to nearly normal. I will not recommend this. I would strongly suggest that a Clean Install is a better cause of action. Unfortunately, Clean install is required, Repair Install will solve nothing.

Of course, a System Restore should be attempted, although usually it will either fail to initialize, or fail to complete.

The reason I know so much about this is because it actually happened to me about a year ago. From this, I managed to do a lot of research on it, as I tried to find out what I could about it. I actually managed a manual fix of about the easier program: Quicktime. Using another computer, with shortcut property analysis, and careful program version checking, and copying, and I had to manually type out many CLSIDs by hand, as they came from Property Windows, and could not be copy and pasted. The fix was very complicated, required another computer with the same program version on it, and was incredibly un-economical on time at about 20 per program. Quicktime was easy as well. 1 installer; 1 shortcut; 20 minutes. Microsoft Office is vastly bigger. Are you willing to spend 20 minutes x (400/2) programs and shortcuts. That works out at 4000 minutes for a complete repair. That is 66 hours, 40 minutes! No thank you!

I hope that I have managed to teach to you a bit about this rare, but important issue. I have seen quite a few misdiagnosis, which often end in the correct solution: Clean Install. However, I feel that I should try to teach to you all about it. I hope you all found this useful. If you did, maybe I should write a few more of these, on similar topics, about things that I feel are not known by quite enough. Maybe!

Thanks!

Richard

What do you think?

Thanks!

Richard

Well, maybe I should clear it up. And thanks for what you posted. Ok, the basic fact of the matter is, after i did the last update, all of a sudden I cant update my adobe or quicktime, I tried to uninstall and reinstall, but I couldn't uninstall them. My icons have been messed up for a while, but they do function, they just don't display correctly.

Does that help clear up, what I was trying to ask.

My Computer

I understand now, sorry. Firstly this is going to be quite a big problem now. These programs live on in uncountable places in the registry. It is simply impossible to find them all. What we will have to do is to remove some of the biggest places, until installation will continue, and then install. At that point, we can uninstall, removing all of the registry keys, ready for a fresh install.

There is one little trick that might help. Download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility from here. Ignore the Microsoft Office Logo.

|MG| Windows Installer CleanUp Utility 7.2 Download

Now install and run the tool. Can be found in the unfoldered section at the top of All Programs. Run it.

Now uninstall all of the following:

Apple Application Support
Apple Mobile Device Support
Apple Software Update
Bonjour

[DEL]iTunes[/DEL]
Mobile Me Control Panel
QuickTime
[DEL]Safari[/DEL]
Adobe Reader
[DEL]Adobe Flash Player
Adobe Shockwave
Adobe AIR[/DEL]

Some will be recorded as "(All Users)", and others not, so look at the bottom of the list, and the top. Have a look at the bottom and top of the list, and you will understand what this comment means, even if you don't at the moment have a clue!

Items struck through do not need to be removed at this point in time. DO NOT REMOVE THEM! They are just in the list for ease for me.

At this point RESTART THE COMPUTER, and do NOT attempt to start iTunes.

Try to install:

The QuickTime and iTunes package. I know I have not uninstalled iTunes. Just bear with me.

Adobe Reader

Right, that is plenty to be getting on with. If any of it fails (ie fails to uninstall or install etc) then come back here without continuing on.

Thanks!

Richard

Thank you, gracias, merci beaucoup, danke schön, wado, doumo arigatou gozaimasu, gratias, grazie, xièxiè, if only I could express my thanks a million times over, and in a million languages!

You don't know how much that helped me. Thank you very much.

And if you don't mind helping me with one more thing, and I should have put this in the last post, but my office files icons do that wierd grey square, little piece paper icons inside it design, at least that's the best i can describe it. Any thoughts?

Again thanks ahead, I'm working on learning to program, my minors going to be computer science, so yeah, but I'm still not there, and my knowlegde is paltry at best, and what I do know, is from trial and error and exploring my computers dark inner workings, I do know more than the average bear;), but still learning.

In my rush, I kind of explained badly. What I meant was whether my instructions had actually managed to fix anything, or you are just being very polite while you try things out! Once you have confirmed that everything else is working, or not, I will look into the other issue.

Are you learning to code yet, or just going to? What language? I know what you mean about still learning! Ever heard of the Windows Side by Side Configuration? That is about the most interesting inner working of computers, in my opinion, but then again, that is my speciality! If you ever want information, even if it is just a question about what to learn, or a question about how something works, do ask me or post on the forum. It would be wonderful to see more people asking about how things worked, because I am sure a lot of people have these questions, but so few get asked! It seems a waste!

Richard

P.S.: Don't ask me anything about hardware. Not a clue! Not even the shadow of a clue. Ask me about WinSxS, and how to learn about it, and I will write you an essay!
