BSOD Posting instructions question & my problem(s)

To answer initial questions:
Is Vista . . .
- x86 (32-bit) or x64 ?
32 bit, Vista Ultimate
- the original installed OS on the system? - Yes. However, the boot drive was cloned from the initial install over a year ago.
- an OEM or full retail version? - Full retail version

- What is the age of system (hardware)?
MB - ASUS P8H67M-LE, memory (4gb), Power Supply - 5/2011
HDD - main drive - Samsung 2TB, purchased 11/2010
CD Drive - purchased 11/2010
all other drives in the system (3) are from older systems.
- What is the age of OS installation (have you re-installed the OS?)
On this drive, 12/2010, but this was a clone not an install. Install on prior drive was in 5/2009. I have not re-installed the OS.

Last new hardware added to the system was in September, when I added a video card to it due to a persistent flicker when it would default to using the Intel drivers on the MB video output. System had been running okay since then up until about 2 weeks ago.

The system is not overclocked.

Receiving a 0x0000004C BSOD most of the time, usually within 1-10 minutes of the system booting normally. Preliminary debugging analysis (using both WhoCrashed and Windows debug tools) point to crcdisk.sys. On the bottom part of the BSOD, it will intermittently give me multiple values.

I've run msconfig and have gone into Services and hidden all Microsoft services, while disabling everything else. Makes no difference whether these are enabled or disabled - if booted in normal mode, it will blue screen within a few minutes.

(While in Safe mode) I have also:
  • Booted from my DVD, and did a startup repair, which reports no problems.
  • run File Checker (SFC /Scannow) - completes with no issues.
  • run both Malwarebytes & Spybot - they report a clean system.
  • run Avast virus scanner - reports no viruses (have not run this in safe mode)
  • run Memtest86+ for about 6 hours, reporting no issues

However, if I boot into safe mode with networking, the system will run for days without a BSOD.

Besides resolving my issue, my initial question regarding Posting Instructions (*) - can these tools be run in Safe mode & provide useful information, or must they be run & collected when the PC has been booted in normal mode?

Thanks for answering my initial question, and in advance for any help in hopefully resolving my issue.

An afterthought - there had been one issue that had cropped up recently (2-3 weeks before BSOD), and is still an issue when the system decides to boot normally. I will get a Security Center message, saying there are multiple issues. When I check, it says that it cannot find my Virus Scanner (Avast, which is there and appears to be working & is also one of the recommended ones when it shows you your options), and Windows Defender is stopped. When I try to start Windows Defender, it gives me a message saying "Can't start Windows Defender". (Going from Memory) I think the Microsoft Security Center service is started on the system. Do not know if this is related or pertinent, but it is an unresolved issue.

Thank you, Richard.

I had linked back to that same post in my original (*). Is information gathered while the system is in safe mode useful in helping resolve an issue, or must that info be collected when the system is booted normally?

Thanks!

We need the computer to BSOD. If you try to gather the information in safe mode, that may not happen.

Understood & thanks for the clarification - I didn't see in those instructions whether it made a difference or not.

I will let it blue screen, then reboot in normal mode & gather as much info about the BSOD as I can until it does it again (rebooting in normal mode until I complete it), and then reboot in safe + network and upload the results.

Thanks!

It ran fine for 4 days, then blue screened on me yesterday (the data that is attached) and then again while I was trying to post here.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks!

I've got Windows Vista Ultimate, full retail version that I bought probably in 2007 or so. To my knowledge, neither SP1 nor SP2 is on the DVD. However, my windows version says it has SP2 installed.

If I read the link properly, it sounds like I am up the creek without a paddle. How can you extract/overlay that driver & correct the problem?

My Computer

I must be doing something wrong.

I found my version (4) - Vista Ultimate, and browsed into the folder on my dvd, and found the crcdisk.sys file, and extracted it.

I got the message:
"o can not open output file c:\windows\system32\drivers\crcdisk.sys"

and I went in, grabbed the registry setting & took ownership of the file, and tried again to extract it, but got the same message.

Now in c:\windows\system32\drivers folder, I do not see crcdisk.sys file anywhere in there.

My Computer

Go to search type cmd
In cmd type driverquery. Do you see it?

I did a restore a few minutes ago, and it is now there.

I tried to extract the crcdisk.sys from the dvd, and get this error message:

"0 ERROR: Can not delete output file C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\crcdisk.sys"

Also, FWIW, both files are exactly the same size.

My Computer

Did the restore go back before the original problem began?

What I would do is to try the procedure in the tutorial again. If it does not work and the driver is missing, again, I would make sure that updater is set to automatic (set to install updates automatically) and then boot. Hopefully you will get a non corrupt driver. If that does not work, you may have to reinstall. If you want you can download ubuntu to back up your stuff first, if you cannot do it normally with the computer in its current condition.

Richard -

I've done those things & when I try to extract the file from the DVD to my hard drive, I get a box that pops up & says:

7-Zip: Diagnostic Messages
# Message
0 ERROR: Can not delete output file C:\Windows\System32\drivers\crcdisk.sys

the same as before.

Any ideas?

Also, as I said initially, the hard drive is not one I installed Windows Vista on initially. It's a clone of my boot drive at that time, which is now my D: drive.

I did a search for crcdisk.sys and have about 4 of them on the D: drive. They're in these folders:
D:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\crcdisk.inf_296260cb
D:\Windows\winsxs\x86_crcdisk.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6001.18000_none_978b1f9648a639ba
D:\Windows\System32\drivers
D:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\crcdisk.inf_399dba89

The first two have a datetime stamp of 01/19/2008 2:41 AM
The latter two have a datetime stamp of 11/02/2006 4:49 AM

could one of these be copied over it?

Before proceeding, make a full, updated antivirus scan
Download and make a full scan with malwarebytes. Make sure that they are upadated and make sure you do the full scan.
