Solved Vista BSOD after installing new Video Card

Hi,

After installing ANY new graphics card (I've tried multiple Radeon 7870's and now GTX 670), both cards cause BSOD in games relatively quickly.

The only card that will work is my old GTX 280 - which i badly need to upgrade from.

Here's the recent reports:

I've attached the report as requested. Also, some other information: The system is overclocked and has been for almost 3 years without issue. Running stock speeds on the CPU do not change crashes with Radeon HD 7870, however I did just game for 10 minutes with stock speeds with GTX 670 and haven't seen a crash. Unfortunately I have to go for the night, so I can't test further until tomorrow.

Thanks

Initially, it looks like a driver. Lets start with the Video Card Driver. Go to search, type device manager and update driver if already up to date roll back.
If that does not work, I still lear toward a driver, take the driver verifier test

I'd suggest that you firstbackup your data and then make sure you've got access to another computer soyou can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so youcan restore the system using the Vista/Windows 7 Startup Repair feature).

In Windows 7 you can make a Startup Repair disk by going to Start....AllPrograms...Maintenance...Create a System Repair Disc - with Windows Vistayou'll have to use your installation disk or the "Repair your computer"option at the top of the Safe Mode menu .

Then, here's the procedure:
- Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
- Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click"Next"
- Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click"Next"
- Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Low Resource Simulation" and click"Next"
- Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"
- Select "Finish" on the next page.

Reboot the system and wait for it to crash to the Blue Screen. Continue to useyour system normally, and if you know what causes the crash, do thatrepeatedly. The objective here is to get the system to crash because
Driver Verifier isstressing the drivers out. If it doesn't crash for you, then let it run for atleast 36 hours of continuous operation (an estimate on my part).

If you can't get into Windows because it crashes too soon, try it in Safe Mode.
If you can't get into Safe Mode, try using System Restore from yourinstallation DVD to set the system back to the previous restore point that youcreated.

DriverVerifier - Enable and Disable

Do the driver verifier only as a last resort, lets think about this. New Card and driver and now problems, it is most likely a bad card or most likely its driver.

Thanks Rich,

I'm at work right now so I will have to wait until I get home to try your suggestion. As for a bad video card - I highly doubt that as I've tried 3 separate cards assuming that was the problem and nothing changed. Driver sounds more like it, but I'm now curious whether this new video card driver is compatible with my system overclock - as I mentioned briefly last night, after killing the OC, I was able to game for about 10 mins-or-so without issue (BSOD typically after 5mins or less with OC settings).

Perhaps also worth mentioning is: This GTX 670 graphics card is literally brand new, supposed to be released to market today (I got it early), so the only driver available is the one that came bundled in the box. Nvidia doesn't offer newer drivers or even acknowledge that the card exists yet on their website.

Someone suggested I try a driver sweep and reinstall these drivers - perhaps the issue is parts of the old driver (for GTX 280) still in the registry preventing any new driver from working properly.

OC, is often the cause.
Many of our experienced people, suggest that you do not OC if you want to avoid BSODs. I personally, do not OC because I know about the potential problems.
There is a member here, who disagrees with this statement, but I will make it anyway.
The manufacturers of the the computers, know the ideal settings and it came as default.

This is the best start.

You are switching widely different card archiectures, you need to do this.

I'm one who disagrees with Rich, especially with the fact that You are the computer manufactuer. But when trouble shooting you do need to go back to stock and test.

You do have alot of RAM, is it 4x3Gig? or 3x4Gig?

I assume you are using the 750tx, how old is it?
What is your OC at? ~4.0Ghz?
What are your temperatures? cpu and gpu?
What cfard went in first ATI or nVIDIA?

Oh what games?

Have you run Furmark? This would test your card but isnt dependant on a game that can bsod.

Try drivesweeper and regiver.

I will try the driversweep when I get home tonight. This makes sense to me since basically ANY driver/Video Card combination causes a crash except the GTX280 and it's driver.

PSU is Corsair 750TX, about 2 years old.
System runs typically at 3.8GHz, Temps are very low, Idle around low 20's and mid to upper 30's under every-day loads.

Current ram configuration is 3x4GB modules. I also have a 3x2GB kit of OCZ Gold series that I could try if necessary - but I'd prefer not to downgrade to 6GB.

System has always run Nvidia. I tried the AMD cards about a month ago without success and went back to GTX 280 and everything was fine. Now im trying GTX 670, thinking I should stick to Nvidia and still having issues.

Finally, I was testing with Microsoft Flight since it's a demanding game in terms of graphics. I very briefly tried Crysis and Starcraft 2, I did not experience a crash but again, these tests were extremely brief. I have not tried futuremark.

You should try furmark instead of futuremark... Futuremark still acts like a game, furmark tests differently,m less game like.

Where do you live that youre in low 20's? My apartment is mid 20's on a cool day, and i'm in Canada!

It's not totally surprising you'd get troubles with a 680, due to it being right new.

I al;so don't think its bad RAM, but maybe a memory controller stress. Up your qtt/vtt voltage 1 notch maybe. You definately have the heat over head to play with.

I too live in Canada. But yes, my temperature monitor seems to show around 23 celcius at idle... I do use a large 5-heatpipe, dual fan CPU cooler with Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound as well - maybe that's why.

I appreciate all the suggestions, I'm anxious to get home and try some of these things out. This is the first time that I've been stumped by a BSOD and I've always had overclocked systems.

If you can think of anything else please share!

Yha. You can usually get by upgrading in a gpu family 550 -> 580 or 6670 -> 6980

But when you start mixing different generations and even worse ati-> nvidia it goes all bad.
