Solved HP Mini BSOD

windows8

Power User
Hi again.

I have a HP Mini 110 netbook here and I'm getting a BSOD on start up

Originally running Win XP Chinese

Upgraded to Windows 7 English and 3 of my drivers stopped working

Network

Ethernet

Sound

I did a quick search and found out that my specific net-book's drivers only work with Windows XP. Now attempting to downgrade back to XP.

Installation gives me driver error.

Downloaded all the drivers, and threw them on my net-book using a USB drive and updated it. Restarted my computer, the sound was kind of working, the touch pad was fully functional, but there was still no internet.

After realizing that without a wifi connection my laptop would be useless, I threw in another windows XP installation and it went by extremely slowly (3-4 hours). at the end of the installation, it gave me an error which was linked to drivers, and it said that was the reason that setup had failed.

Now running a Primary Hard Disk Self Test from bios, I will post the results once its done.

RESULTS:

Primary Hard Disk Self Test
Target Disk : ST9160314AS
Test Finished : Passed
Test Status : (Completed without error)

Initial Post was getting too long, I'll post the errors in here to shorten it.

Error #1: Now put in a windows XP setup disk, and selected "debug partition 2"

Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem.
Could not read from the selected boot disk.
Check boot path and disk hardware.
Please check the windows documentation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference manuals for additional information.

Error #2: Now selected "Press F8 for troubleshooting and advanced startup options"

I/O Errore (not sure if screen cut off or just says "errore")

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\BOOTSECT.DOS

Error #3: The new error that occurs when I install."

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please Re-install a copy of the above file.

Error #4: Now took out the installation disk and ran windows from HD.

Windows Could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem.
Could not read from the selected boot disk.
Check boot path and disk hardware.
Please check the windows documentation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference manuals for additional information.

Setup will install windows XP on partition

D: Partition 1 [fat32]

Had two options

1) Convert the partition to NTFS

2) Leave the currrent file system intact <no changes>

I chose #1 and it gave me this:

Error #5: Chose "format drive and continue" at setup

Setup has determined that drive D: is corrupted and cannot be repaired.

Setup cannot continue. to quit setup, press f3.

*Pressed F3*

Windows XP has not been installed on this computer.

If there is a floppy disk in drive A: remove it.

Restarting windows.

Now I chose option #2

Error #6: When choosing second option

Setup has determined that drive D: is corrupted and cannot be repaired.

Setup cannot continue. To quit setup, press F3.

Now I chose "debug partition 1"

and its installing

Error #7: CMD box pops up at desktop with windows xp theme

RunOnce // Search and Start setup file

Searching for the file "OEM\RunOnce\Auto Setup.cmd" in all the Drives.
Please wait...

The file "OEM\RunOnce\Auto Setup.cmd" couldn't been found in any of the Drives. You can search for the file "Auto Setup.cmd" manually and if you find one in a "OEM\RunOnce\" Directory then you can execute it manually from there.]

Do you want to run the auto file search again?

Alright, Time for a new post, don't want too much info in a single post.

Now from that windows XP desktop that was provided to me by the setup, I can access my desktop and I see that there are wireless networks available in my list, so this means that my drivers are working again.

Now continuing from my previous post.

I entered "N" and the cmd box closed on me. Now I have windows XP with a blank desktop and the recycling bin in the corner of my screen.. I think it might have worked, as my drivers are all working and it is in English.

Downloaded google chrome and surfed the internet, unplugged my USB and it was the same, installed windows updates, auto restarted and got this error:

Sounds like you actually need an XP Forum. That being said. You can test your hard drive

XP, Vista, Ubuntu

They all boot using usb, but at the moment its on XP.

I tried another XP forums (justanswer) and they expect me to pay $20-60 just for online help.

EDIT:

For the seatools HD testing, I chose "fix all, long"

Its a SATA 5VC5SB7H.. model number ST9160314AS. if this makes any sense.
Anyways, I'll post the test results. thanks so much.

If you pass, there are tests for other areas. We will find the problem.

Its 99% complete. I'll edit the results into this post when its done.

Asides from this, my screen resolution is rather zoomed in.. and the properties is stuck in 640x480 and won't move. it used to be 800x600 I think, and it looked fine for the screen.

EDIT: It passed the test.

EDIT: I'm going to modify my boot.ini file.. im running xp pro so it shouldn't be hard.

Previous boot.ini:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

New boot.ini

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

And see if it gives me any errors or tells me whats going on here.

Im getting error #1 and #3 from this site

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314477

EDIT: Rebooted after setting the new boot.ini

Prompted with a multi boot option...

A) Windows XP Professional
B) Windows (default)

I chose option B) and it lead me to a blank black screen.

I chose option A) and it lead me to to the same error as before, the one about the disk hardware configuration and not being able to read from the selected boot disk.

Allright, now I think I'm getting somewhere.. I'll go back to my boot.ini and play around with it some more.

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

new boot.ini

^ that didnt work.. deleted the multi boot function.

new boot.ini

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Allright, with the above boot.ini I now have multi boot for

A) Windows XP Professional
B) Windows (Default)
on option B i get the missing .dll, so now I'll use that microsoft link to attempt to fix that.

EDIT: while searching for the missing .dll problem, I actually found that the

B) Windows (default)

was caused by the boot.ini

Oh well, still no luck with setup or booting up. But it runs perfectly when its being booted off my USB ..

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

@Richc46

Just incase you got confused or anything, this is a separate computer from the one from my other thread.

Now that I can log in and access the internet along with the F8 function on startup, what would be a good test to take?

Yes, I'm able to clean boot, but it has to be off of my USB.

I'm just trying to find a common fix between windows XP and windows 7 at the moment.

Would it make you more comfortable or help you to help me if I booted into windows vista?

Ah, I understand.

I'll keep trying once I get home and see how it works, since XP is perfect and 7 is almost there, I'll probably settle on vista as long as my drivers will allow me.

I tried posting in a couple other XP forums, but nobody replied. just alot of views on my thread.

Thanks alot for your help despite this being out of your area. I would rep you again but the forum doesn't allow me to rep you twice in a row. Not that it makes a difference, you are after all the "vista guru".

EDIT: well, now I rebooted it in windows 7 and I'm in the process of cleaning up my HD.

windows 7 will now boot from the HD. as long as the driver will work then I'm happy.

just updating registry settings until I get something right.

Thanks so much for your time, and I hope that my long posts of random error codes will help someone out.

DOUBLE EDIT: My screen is now back to its original resolution! I'm going to continue with my updating and playing around with it until I get it right. thanks again.

Well this is just great! I guess that final boot.ini setting that I used really worked, now I'm running windows 7 ultimate 32bit, all my drivers working, connected to the internet and even rebooted fine. I guess this netbook has a happy ending.

Now just to buy a hard drive for that other HP laptop I made a thread about ..
