Driver Power State Failure

Hi All

New to forum and relatively useless with computers beyond using simple programs.

Recently began experiencing extended shutdown and startup times, started with 5-10 minutes and kept getting longer. Was told that after a few years and two kids downloading everything they clicked on it was probably due to alot of extra junk running. So I saved everything I needed and endevoured to reload the OS (Vista Home Premium 32bit), just pop in the disk and follow the instruction they said, "It's easy" they said.

Everything seemed to progress nicely, followed the prompts, windows will restart several times etc etc.

Runs for approx 48 hours on the scrolling bar then get:

Driver Power State Failure
Stop: 0x0000009F (0x00000003, 0x828EE908, 0x828EE908, 0xC4915340)

Attempted restarts to safe mode or to command prompt are unsuccessful as it is disabled during windows reload

I've read through several of the previous DPSF threads and everyone is asked for a "minidump", please don't ask unless you know a psychic that can commune with my laptop as it will not advanced to any state other than BSOD at this point.

Lets see if its hardware or software, try to boot in safe mode.

Thanks for the quick response RichC46...

However as stated in the original post attempted restarts to safe mode or to command prompt are unsuccessful as it is disabled during windows reload (at least that the message I received when attempting several times previously)

Hi Rich
Thanks again for the quick response.

Maybe I didn't state my hope clearly enough.
As my laptop will not boot after consistently spending 48+ hours on the scroll bar, I have made several attempts in the last couple weeks.
I was hopeful someone might be able to decipher the error message and tell me what might need replacing..was hoping the parenthetical string might have a meaning.

I could tell you exactly what 9F means, it indicates a driver problem, but one report is far from definitive. To state it another way, one report rarely gives enough information to solve the problem. That being said, I am trying to solve it using other means. For example, if you can back up your stuff, I can get your running again, as long as its not a hardware problem.
In addition, 9F, does not tell us what driver.
AND
Regarless of what it means, we have to try and get you to boot first.

I did backup specific data but not restore points etc before the failed attempt at reloading the OS.

When I initially attempted restarting using restore points, even going back a few months, it didn't remedy the problem.

So I agree that it's a hardware problem given that a clean reload of the OS didn't help, was hoping to get an idea what it might be before paying a service tech a bench fee if it turns out to be a true screen of death and cheaper to buy new than repair...

Unfortunate for me that the error message doesn't provide enough detail, at least I have learned to get a "minidump" in the future before just nukeing everything.

I can get to the F2 / F12 but that is about it, once past that point is when it goes to scrolling for 48-60 hrs then the blue screen

The reports can tell us if its software. If its hardware it takes testing to determine the cause, ie. memory, cpu, etc.
Even if its hardware, and you have several dumps, they give the failed driver (that is due to hardware) but they never tell us precisely.
If you were able to load Ubuntu, we could test for hardware, but if you computer is just there dead, not much we can do.
Any beeps when you try to boot?

Saved everything I wanted before the attempt to reload Vista, I expected the reload to clear everything from the harddrive

Turn off computer
boot during boot press cntrl and then quickly and many times hit F11
If that does not work try the same with f8. It should restore you to factory specs.
Your stuff will be lost.
