win explorer crash on drag & drop

Hi. I'm hoping someone out there has an opinion on this. Windows explorer keeps crashing when I try to drag a file from one folder to another and random folders are inaccessible, they crash before opening. Have mcafee installed and ran a scan, did a cleanup and defrag etc. Started 3 days ago so I did a system restore to before that but no joy. No clue what to try next. Ideas please.

Hi pyrexia,

Check in the Event Viewer to see if the error is logged so that you can find out what is causing it to crash.

To go to Event Viewer, please follow the steps:
1. Open Event Viewer by clicking the Start button.
2. Click Control Panel.
3. Click System and Maintenance.
4. Click Administrative Tools, and double-clicking Event Viewer.
5. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Also, try to do SFC scannow and check if the issue gets fixed; please use the following link for detailed instructions: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978-system-files-sfc-command.html.

Please post back with the results.

thanks Madhur for your reply. I tried the event viewer and it seems to be a sidebyside issue. Tried the online help button but there was no result found. I'm not so good at comd prompt tasks especially as online help seem to differ as to layout etc. (possibly different OS version. This is an oldish Dell desktop, inspiron 531 and it may just be on it's last legs after 4 years of faithful service.

My Computer

Hi pyrexia,

To go Safe mode with networking and check if the problem persists, please use the following link for detailed instructions:http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88009-advanced-boot-options.html

If no, try to do a clean boot to check if would work, providing the link to do a clean boot for reference: How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows Vista or Windows 7

If yes, create a new user account and configure with the same e-mail and check if it works. Please use the following link for detailed instructions to create a new user account, ensure that the new user account is an Administrator account: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/93009-user-account-create.html
