Ok, so I have this DVD/CD-rom drive, & I`ve been burning CD-R/DVD-R for over six months on my new ASUS Z53E series laptop, runing Vista Home Premium, because that`s the discs I`m used to buying. Now I find out that there`s this other option: CD+R/DVD+R
Out of curiosity, I looked on my CD/DVD drawer, & writen really, really small, there`s this DVD+R DL. So I decided to buy DVD+R, thinking that may be they`re better, because that`s what is writen on the DVD drawer. Tried burning a dvd, but it doesn`t happen. Should I change some settings on my Nero/DVD flick , may be the book type? or do I need to let the computer know that I`m burning +, not -
I just wonder why I can write on -, when what is writen on the drawer is a +, but I cannot write on DVD+R.
I hope I explained myself more or less, THANKS!!

Hello cosmicpeace,
When i have burned a DVD i have had to fornat the DVD first before i could write to it, format the DVD first and see what happen's.

Did you have to format it because it was a DVD+R? Do they work in a different way to DVD-R? Because I never had to format my Verbatim DVD-R, they`re already formatted, but I wonder if it`s different with DVD+R
By the way, the DVD+R I`m using are Memorex.
Thanks again!

I dont burn a lot of DVD's, but i have had to format every one. give it a go and see if that help's. If you follow the link it will explain the difference between the two type's, it wont make a difference to burning if they are + or -

It could also be just a bad batch of discs.

Does the discs packaging say if they are formatted or un-formatted?

The only discs I've ever had to format have been dvd-rw. I've never had a problem with dvd-r or dvd+r with a DVD+r burner.

For universality, i.e. playability on most machines, you are far better off sticking with DVD-R and CD-R. However, DVD+R DL are the best choice in dual layer.

The manufacturers website will list all its capabilities.

The only discs I've ever had to format have been dvd-rw. I've never had a problem with dvd-r or dvd+r with a DVD+r burner.

It doesn`t actually say wether they`re formatted or not, it just has something about updating your drivers and recorders for 16x DVD+R Discs. But when I go to device manager, my computer says that the drivers are up to date.
I do agree, the only discs I ever had to format are DVd-rw.
Thanks!

Perhaps the firmware for that burner needs updating? You go to the manufacturer's website for that.

You can check what version you have by going to Device Manager/DVD/CD-ROM Drives, right-click the drive/Properties and go to the Details tab. Select Hardware Ids from the drop-down menu and it shows there.

The Hardware ids value is AS02

Ok, so I`ve done this google search & I went into a website (Backfire) that offers a free download of TS-L632H_AS02_ASUSOEM.zip (12 Jan 08), my computer is an ASUS, I guess that`s the right one.
I spent ages yesterday at the proper Samsung website looking for the right firmware, downloaded an update program & everything, & it didn`t work on my computer. Anyway, I guess this should be the right one? THANKS!!!

Yes, I have, but I wasn`t able to find anything because the site has been down for maintenance for quite a while, so I can only access forums & things like that. But I`m gonna give it another try, & see if it`s working.
THanks for that!

Ahhhhhhh!!!! Having a rant here, cos they`re so useless on the Asus website. For starters, I had to search for another address to get in there, cos the one they gave me with the computer keeps bein down for repairs (for the last month???). Anyway, I find another address, & I cannot download for Vista, cos there isn`t an option at all: the Os on offer are XP or MS...what is MS? isn`t that the REALLy old operating system?

I think MS means Mac OS/2 etc. although that's a bit confusing. I searched Asus worldwide and didn't come up with anything at all anyway.

What gets me is, why on Earth doesn't Samsung's website know about their own drive? I can't find it listed.

I no longer have a TSST drive but when I did I used a utility they have for download on their website that you install and when you run it it tells you what TSST drivers and firmware are needed if not already installed.
It's called "LiveUpdate".

I tried the Samsung live update, I downloaded it a couple of days ago, & when I run it in my computer, it told me that my computer wasn`t included on the Live update!! I know, they should be the ones providing firmware for their own drives, & I only bought my laptop less than a year ago.

Anyway, I posted in the Asus forum, asking for the new firmware for my drive, but I have posted before & it`s hopeless, that`s why I post here, cos I get answers really quick. In the ASUS one, I`ve posted a question about system restore over a month ago, & nothing yet!!
Thanks guys!!

I think LiveUpdate.exe has to be run in compatability mode as administrator or something like that, I can't recall what I did now.
