DVD driver does not read any disks

I currently have a HP pavillion laptop, with a PIONEER DVDRW DVR-K17B ATA Device. Running Vista Ultimate OS, and I only notice lately, though I believe it has been like this for awhile, it will not read any disks, dvd, cd or any other. The disk management does not list my CD/DVD drive under storage, or at all, but in the device manager it says there is no problem.

I dont want to uninstall the driver, because I dont know where the file to reinstall it can be gotten, or where it is on my computer. It is really annoying because I cannot install anything, rip/burn cds or any other thing which requires a CD.

Please help me to solve this problem, any additional information needed, just ask, and possible tell me where to find it, I am good with computers, just don't touch the drivers very often.

Ok, so if I uninstall the driver I can just restart my computer and it will find the driver?

Doing this did nothing for my problem, this is very frustrating to me. I accessed BIOS via F9 on startup, and it doesn't list any optical drives, let alone the one for my PIONEER DVDRW drive.

I thank you in advance for any help you give

Did you access BIOS on the first attempt at reboot. if so DON'T.

What I do to re-nstall my DVD drive, is uninstall in device manager, re-boot normally, ie. going thru full boot up process, logging in, during which you will see text saying "installing new device driver software" in a "text bubble" in lower right side of screen. If you go into BIOS first, immediately after the UNINSTALL, it may not show up. Let it go thru the normal stages of BOOT up.

Now, I could be off totally on my interpretation of what you mean, but I have uninstalled, then re-installed my CD/DVD drive at least 4 or 5 times on this computer and it always comes back and functions. I have never gone into BIOS setup immediately after unistall.

Hopefully this helps if not, I apologize.

No worries mate, i tried to get into BIOS to find it after it had reinstalled. And the reinstall did nothing for it. I just got windows 7 upgrade, and am using an image file of the disk to get around my DVD driver, but it will be a while before i can use it, as I need to do a clean install. Hopefully it is a problem with vista and Windows 7 install will fix it.

If it does/doesn't, i will leave a message here once i install

Windows 7 fixed the CD drive for the most part, it works for most CDs/DVDs but still not for some
