Driver for SD card reader

My wife has a Gateway MT3705 laptop that is 3 years old. It reads normal SD cards, but not SD-HC cards. I have been looking on the Gateway website for an up-to-date driver (because I think in 2007 HC cards were not yet around), but I could not see any driver that looked promising.
Does anybody have a suggestion on how to make this laptop read SD-HC cards.

You need an outboard card reader that's HDSC compatible. Luckily, a lot of manufacturers make USB-plug ones that are speedy and pretty cheap.

I'm looking at the drivers available for your model: yeah, sketchy! There's nothing in the page or the download itself that explains what the upgrades are fixing or upgrading. That's sketchy.

If you could find who makes the actual motherboard you could see if the manufacturer has a firmware update. For instance, Quanta Computer, Inc. in Taiwan makes mine. They don't offer firmware upgrades, but some manufacturers do.

Thanks for the input. The mobo route yielded nothing. And the outboard reader route would defeat the purpose. The reason we wanted to use the SD-HC cards is to park all my wife's data on it. We travel between 3 locations and she has a laptop at each location. The other 2 read HC cards, but not this one.
She prefers the SD cards over a USB stick because the cards do not stick out and are less likely to get damaged. Unfortunately she has outgrown the non-HC 2GB cards and needs more capacity. And 2 seperate cards are not convenient either. Can't win. I guess we'll go with the USB stick after all.

Hello WHS,

Seems like there's no media card reader on the Gateway site for your lappy. Here's the link: Gateway Support Drivers & Downloads

However, I would suggest to download and install this driver and see what happen. It's from the little bigger brother in Gateway family, the MT6705, that I had once, btw. I often use drivers from different Gateway models with good results. Hope it helps.

Cheers....:)

Thanks Martee. I guess it is worth a try. Too bad they do not say from when this driver is. If it it pre SD-HC, it may not help.
