critical system driver hdhroftl.sys

On my laptop, I ran my recovery CD a couple times without luck. Safe mode and last known configuration do not work either.

The startup screen says I'm missing system32/drivers/hdhroftl.sys

I can't find this file on my desktop PC and google turns up no results - it sounds like a file which I don't really need but maybe a virus or spyware changed my system config. Is there anything I can do?

Hello cre and welcome to the forums

Try booting from the Vista disc and then doing a system restore to before you started experiencing the problem.

i would love to know how this turns out, sounding very familiar, however i can't do anything with the replies here, they didn't work, don't have recovery or full os disk.

hey pug, i couldn't even get into windows to restore and i didn't have a disk, so i just reinstalled xp instead of keeping my vista.

restore to last working configuration didn't work either from the boot menu

i still haven't found out what hdhroftl.sys is and where i got it from.
