OS: Vista Home Premium 32bit
System: Acer Aspire 5100-3949 Laptop
GPU: ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 integrated gpu
runs off of shared memory. Laptop has 2GB. GPU is given 256mb.
Running latest Drivers available for my GPU.

I've had this laptop since March of 2007. I've reinstalled Vista on it probably 3 times over it's lifetime. I've had this error in 1 previous install I believe. I last reinstalled Vista around mid 2009.

Recently (last few weeks) I've started getting the atikmdag.sys error again. Screen goes blank for 2 seconds. Then I get a pop up in the notification area that the driver has stopped responding has successfully recovered. I get no BSOD's or any of that. It just happens and It keeps going.

It happens when I watch a fullscreen video on Youtube. It happens on Google Maps. The other day I was on Apple.com to check out the new iPod's and when I went to the main screen of the iPod Touch the error happened again. It happens each time I go there.

I've read plenty of forum post all across the web ranging from as old as 2006 to as recent as Feb 2010. I've tried everything.

Uninstalling ATI Install Manager and CCC.

Uninstalling All ATI drivers, Install Manager, CCC then going into Safe Mode and running DriverSweeper. Then reinstalling Drivers ONLY.

Uninstalling everything again, using DriverSweeper again and installing drivers through Device Manager.

Installing drivers from early 2007.

Changing boot settings to use One core(all I have anyways) and using all RAM.

Uninstalling the KB952287 update

None of the above has worked at all.

Is there any TRUE fix out here? Or anything that I haven't tried?

How hot does it get?

My aspire got dirty/dust in the intakes and caused crashing... Mine was a year old... Cleaning it out fixed it all.

And to double check, you're running 10.8?

BTW the error is gpu related...

Have you checked you RAM? use memtest86+ from www.memtest.org
Seeing as its shared RAM, it could be ram related.

Doesn't get too hot. I pop it open every few months to clean out the fan. Plus I live in the North East and Summer is fading away.

The latest drivers available for the X1100 are the 10.2 drivers which were released in February. That's what I have installed.

No, I haven't done a memtest but I'll run that and see what I get.

All i can think is bad hardware... Which is pretty crappy being a laptop...

You could run atitools to test for artifacting.

Not a hardware problem. People with cards going back to 2006 or brand spanking new cards of 2010 experience the same problem. Even people who have swapped cards haven't been able to resolve it.
