USB to Serial Driver not installing

I have a hand-held GPS which I use for hillwalking.

Recently I purchased a USB to RS232 cable to allow my serial-port GPS to connect to my computer via a USB port. I've used the same cable on my XP machine and it works perfectly.

However, when I install (as Administrator) the supplied Vista driver on my Vista system I meet with no success. I go through the process of installing the driver from the disk supplied and it appears to successfully go through the process all the way to 'Finish'. Almost immediately after this a message pops up from the system tray saying that the driver was not successfully installed and proceeds to search Windows Update without any success. I've directed a search to the driver on the disk but I simply get a message 'Driver not found'. When I plug in the usb later I get a message saying that I need a driver to be installed which has me going through the same procedure again but without any success apart from the driver APPEARING to be successfully installed.

To see if it was just my computer which has the problem I went to my friend's computer which has the Vista OS. I went through the same process on his machine and still was unable to install the driver/get the computer to recognise the installation. As I've said, the whole process works and installs perfectly on WXP when I install the XP driver supplied.

Would anyone have any idea why this installation is unsuccessful? Many thanks.

I've changed the DEP settings and also dragged the driver to the desktop. I then ran the Vista driver installer.exe The same problem still occurs. I go through the installation to the finish and then connect my gps (I've also tried it with the gps connected) but still get the message saying that 'Windows needs to install driver software'. I install again and join the merry-go-round once more. Very frustrating.
