I need help with driver problems.

My Toshiba Satelite A505-S6865 crashed with a lost HDD. It was 500GB. I had a dual-boot of Vista and Kubuntu 14.04. I replaced the HDD with a TB drive and installed Vista from my Recovery Disk. I was unable to connect to the internet via WiFi and checked the Device Manager to find both WiFi and NIC had the yellow !.

I did not receive any CD's or DVD's with my Laptop, so I do not have any drivers to install and without Internet connection, I am unable to download and install drivers.

I have attempted to locate, download and install drivers to USB on my Desktop PC, however 3 of the drivers only provide the 'Run' option, and because I am not downloading to the laptop due to not having connection to the Internet, I am stuck and not sure what to do.

I am old, no longer able to drive, and on a very low fixed income, so it is very difficult for me to afford hiring professionals to solve my problems; I would like help here, if possible with ideas how I can fix my problems myself.

When I installed the Linux OS to my computer, the latest drivers for all hardware were done automatically, so I am posting from the Kubuntu OS right now. For economic reasons, I use the Linux OS mostly, but I really like having Vista too as a backup, and it came with the computer. Occasionally I have a problem with the Linux OS and Windows Vista saves me.

I was able to download and install the WiFi drivers to a USB Thumb Drive but still haven't been able to make a connection, and the Device Manager still shows a problem with WiFi.

Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :) I do not have any command line experience in Vista, so if a console is required, please be explicit.

Hi
I will try to help you solve your problem. Please provide me with the network controller Device ID from Device Manager.
Here is how to find it:

Click Start, type Device, and select Device Manager from the list of results. Click Continue to the Prompt. Now find the device and right click it, and select Properties. Go to the details tab, and on the dropdown list select Hardware Ids. Please provide me with ALL of the Ids listed. I will then find correct drivers for you.

Good Luck!

Dear Josh, thanks for the kind response. I am quite old and sometimes get distracted for health reasons. sorry for taking so long in replying.

I have 5 missing drivers and may have been able to get them, if 2 of them did not prevent me from Internet access. I will list all 5 in case that makes an efficient use of your time and effort. If not, the ones that will permit me to get online again will be fine. I currently have a need for my laptop, so your help will be appreciated. These are the drivers:

Intel (R) RTL 8168D/9111D Family PCI-E GBE NIC
Intel (R) WiFi Link 5100 AGN
TOSHIBA Sodtware Modem
Ricoh PCIe Memory Stick Host Controller
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4500 Series

The drivers, not affecting access to the Internet, are not a great problem, but the missing Internet drivers make practical use of the computer impossible.

I just spent a few more hours today with DLink and Toshiba which did not help. I have purchased many items from both of them over the years, and am rethinking that proposition now. They both need someone like you to serve. Any help will be appreciated, my friend.

Thanks Shab :)

Hello Shab,

It is all ok, and I hope your health is all ok :)
I will be looking up the drivers and will provide you with the drivers in one combined .zip file. I will get all of your hardware working correctly, and once the drivers are installed, there should be no problem I hope!

I will have the file ready sometime tomorrow or Friday.

Hello Shab,

I have completely found all the drivers for you. They are in this zip file: https://mega.co.nz/#!HQ9UjSab!rCk6zhiQ1_8gJi2Ot4Wy40lMvWZAL9tiq4XUQm7TgiE
Just click the RED "Download to your Computer" button.
Includes all the ones you said were missing.
Got them from TOSHIBA website, so no virus or anything. All for Vista x64.

Hope this helps,

Josh, thanks for your effort. I would like to use your advice, but two of the drivers are what I need to get connected and your response requires Internet connection to complete the repair. I can't connect without the drivers, so I can't take your advice. Is the application you sent, Open Source or is it a commercial product. IF a commercial product, it makes sense that I register. If open source it is not a requirement. I also have a Linux system that I was able to download your fix, but installing the reply required registration, and registration requires connection to the Internet, and I cannot connect to the Internet until I get the contents of your support.

I am confused and probably just don't understand something. Additionally, your reply required Outlook to be installed. I do not particularly like Outlook. but also would install it if necessary.

My problem still exists, the network whether direct connect with ethernet cables or wireless cannot be made until the drivers you are supplying are installed.

I am responding from a Kubuntu 14.04 Operating System. My system is dual-boot. On a previous post I was somewhat criticized for mentioning my other system. I hope I didn't just screw up again. My Linux operating system installs all drivers on a re-install, automatically, so direct connection was made when I installed the application.

I installed my other system after installing Vista, and Vista did not include or install drivers for the mentioned drivers in my list.

Your help method is really cool, though. I wish I were connected so I could take advantage of the work.

Shab :)

Dear Josh,

Thanks for your patience. I hope my general lack of computer knowledge doesn't frustrate you and make you leave.

I just attempted to install the drivers you sent. I know you have sent the proper help, but I am just not bright enough to take the information and make it work.

A while back, I started using a Linux system, just because of my inabilities. They do this driver stuff automatically; I am dual-boot and currently able to access the Internet on my other operating system, but it would be nice to be able to get Vista working agian.

I don't know what I am doing wrong. Everything seemed to be installing properly; when I clicked finish, I got no error messages or any indication that something had not been done properly, however, after restarting the computer and accessing the Device Manager, all 5 services still have the error showing. A new one is now showing error, modem installing, but I think that relates to a telephone connection and I am ethernet and/or wireless connected when things are working properly.

I am old on a small fixed income, so I have to spend wisely. Just getting to a place that provides me service in computer related matters costs me about $40 round trip; I no longer drive or am able to walk the distance to a bus, so I have to take a taxi everywhere I go. Minimum support costs about $70 just to open the box, and I am currently too close on my money to make these expenditures.

Since you have been so kind getting the necessary drivers for my laptop, can you make any further recommendations how I may get the drivers working without additional expense. It is very embarrassing to be in my position and telling others, but I have to play the cards that were dealt to me. At 72, starting over is impossible.

I realize I am asking a lot, but no alternatives come to mind that I can handle. Either way, thanks for the generous help you provided.

Dear Josh,

Are there any command line entries that would reveal my error? In my other operating system, when I have problems that are over my head, the forum's gurus usually provide command-line instructions that reveal the missing, error correcting, information. After I post the results, they are then able to advise the solution in a way that I can understand.

I am mostly concerned about getting connected to the Internet, so the hard-line connection drivers and WiFi connection drivers are most important to get things back to normal. I believe I can fix the other problems, perhaps without further help, if I can just become Internet connected on my laptop.

Would a screen print of my Device Manager be of any help? -or any other attachable image?

Thanks friend!

Hello
I have some more ideas, but as oscer1 said, please provide hardware ID

1) Start
2) Type "devmgmt.msc" in the search box (without the quotes)
3) Open devmgmt
4) Yes to User Account Control if prompted
5) Right click each device not recognized
6) Click Properties
7) Click the Details tab
8) Click the dropdown and select "Hardware Ids"
9) Please provide me with the Hardware Ids so I can make sure that the drivers I provided are correct

It is all ok, I have patience :)
I am determined to get your computer working once again for you!

Cheers!

Dear Josh,

I must apologize, both the shell and screen capture work considerably different in my other OS. In that system I have to use them often, so I assumed the process would be similar.

I installed all 5 of the drivers then restarted the computer. When booted up, I first tried to open a browser. When the browser would not open, I opened the Device Manager and saw that all five drivers were still inactive. I did not notice anything peculiar when completing each driver installation. Of course, my confidence is low, because my understanding of what is happening is vague, but when I got the finished selection, I felt I had installed properly. Not so, I guess.

I was unable to copy and paste the results of the scan, so I will type in what it revealed now:

c:\Windows\system 32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resources Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
c:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

c:\Windows\system32\>\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
Access is denied.

What I was attempting as well as expecting here was a print out of the log file. I then planned to highlight the data, copy the data to a word file then upload the attachment to the forum. That is how it is done on my other system.

When I selected the Prtsc on my keyboard, no action window in GUI form appeared, so I was unable to copy the screen to attach similarly.

Such steps are necessary quite often when making repairs in my other OS, so I expected I would be able to send you the info, easily.

In my other system, if I want a screen print, I just hit the Print Screen on the keyboard, a GUI appears asking for instructions. To keep the image smaller, I choose a rectangular area of the screen, then select the portion I want to capture and hit enter. I then have an image file of the selected area only. Next I select 'Insert image' then the file from my computer, then upload. The image then appears in the Reply post where the cursor was last blinking.

I read some of the instructions for Windows Vista making a screen print; I will have to study that a bit more before I can attach an image. I was a little confused when I read the explanation. Additionally, if I had wanted to send a file that included the results of the shell scan, I would have highlighted the pertinent data, same as in any document, in the shell and copy and paste the information to a word file. Then I would select the 'Insert image' then select file search of my computer, then select the file that contained the word document and press 'enter' next I would select the upload option, press enter and the file would appear as an attachment in the Reply post. When I select 'Post Quick Reply' the image would be presented as a GUI of the data contained in the shell. That probably sounds confusing to you, but it is the way my other system functions. I usually do not need a screen print when using Vista, so I haven't needed the capability. I don't understand why selecting the 'scrnprnt' key doesn't capture an image of the desktop. It seems the logical way to do it. Oh well, as my grandkids would say.

I am also a bit confused when I tried to open the log file that I was refused. Being logged in as Administrator should have given me permission, shouldn't it?

It looks like I am going to have to spend more time in my Vista Operating System. There is much to learn.

The log file should be saved in the appropriate place, so if you can explain how I attach and upload it, I think we are good to go. Providing you are willing to continue. Thanks if you do? :)
