hi and welcome,

I wish I could help you with this problem but the only thing i can suggest is try running as administator.

I have got the patch without problem but have had no luck launching games on gamespy. I think windows xp may be the only way. I would advise you to play direct LAN games under vista. It is a shame because RON is the greatest.

sorry I cant be of more help. the exact error message might help us.

cheers

Hi, Jake G, and welcome to the forums.

Patching using the "search for update" button on the games main menu.
To answer your question directly, Installing.

OK, then you should try manually downloading the patch - perhaps it is simply a corrupted file, on your system, causing the problem, and a fully downloaded patch will help confirm this....

IIRC, the in game patching always hits the same server or two - and those servers may have a corrupted file as well....

But, also, IIRC, sometimes these patches are not publicly available....so let us know....

update: I have been trying to patch rise of legends without success.

I have been informed that Big Huge Games have shut down their patch server. Apparently they are not quite as huge as they used to be.

If you know the name of the RON patch file, maybe I can locate it on my system and upload it to you if that would help.

cheers

hi, i have the same problem as everyone else. at 72% i get the same retcode error and its really bugging me! i used every resolution i could find on the internet, but none of them work! even the one on the microsoft website doesn't work haha. to top it all off, bighugegames says on their website that they will not release a stand alone version! AHH! There has to be some way to get this patch working! Thanks!

My Computer

i have the same problem with sev and jake. i enjoyed the game before xp but with the vista i cannot play online due to patch error. it says "invalid patch file error" then "retcode positive -32769. it started when i changed my os to vista. well i can play it offline but not online. i did the patching when i clicked multiplayer mode online. i do not have the patch in cd i tried to get it from gamespy. i did microsoft advise already turning off the antispyware etc.. but to no avail. i think the players already missed me because i am out for about a month already. i hope they missed me or not at all because i always defeated them.
well as for now i am still trying to make it work. i hope someone could fix the problem so we can play again.

I was having the same issue with my Vista computer. The only thing that worked for me was installing and updating the game on an XP machine, then deleting the entire directory on my vista machine, and copying all the RoN files from the XP. A little bit of a pain, but it works.

  • Install on XP and Vista.
  • Update on XP (my Vista was updated to errer, but I don't think it will matter).
  • Delete the ...\program files\Microsoft Games\Rise of Nations directery on the Vista.
  • Copy the ...\program files\Microsoft Games\Rise of Nations directery from the XP
  • Paste the updated verson onto the Vista's ...\program files\Microsoft Games\Rise of Nations directery (use a thumb drive or LAN network, the folder is big, and could take some time.)
  • Run the game, and enjoy!:D

My Computer

So, I found the way How to update without using XP!
Just Right click on RoN Icon on your desktop.
In dialog-menu- choose Run as administrator.

then.... just Update
ENJOY.... ioffer.

My Computer

I'm really glad you posted your recommendation, Nicvaroce. That was the only thing that worked for me. I wouldn't have thought moving the directory would work due to differences in underlying binaries, however, it did!

Now, I'm happily able to play with my buddies having just moved my patched XP directory over to Vista.

Thanks again!

P.S. I tried that idea to right click on the Rise of Nations icon and run as admin, but it didn't work for me.

My Computer

Nicvaroce, you rock dude!

Having just received a lush system I spent a frustrating 3 hours trying to get RON to play. First the screen kept crashing - finally found out how to fix this by modifying the rise2.ini file (thank god for .ini files!).

Then when it wasn't patching I was pulling my hair out. However, tried your technique of transferring the directories across and now working perfectly, thanks again man!

My Computer

Is there a chance you could explain it in simple terms for poeple like me who have no idea what all that means. I love the game and would love to be able to play online but have no idea what you mean about doing it on xp then vista. I dont have xp anymore.

My Computer

Hey Dutchhack

Have you read Nicvaroce's explanation on page 1 of this thread? Luckily I still had RON on my old XP machine and was able to copy all the files over to my new vista machine, I don't know of another way to get it working sorry!

My Computer

Not sure if this will help you all, but this worked for me...and I'm not sure why.

1) Uninstall RON on Vista
2) Reinstall RON on Vista and allow computer to restart
3) Right Click on RON icon on desktop, select "Run as administrator"

Now...pay attention and be prepared to act quickly

4) Select "Check for Updates" on the main menu, RON will find the update and download it. IMPORTANT...once the download is complete RON automatically exit to the Windows desktop and begin installing the update. After the DOWNLOAD completes, IMMEDIATELY disconnect your internet network access. I have a laptop with a wireless network button, so I simply press the wireless button and no more network. If you're not wireless, I would suggest carefully pulling out your network cable quickly. In my case, the installer worked fine and my RON was updated.

I can't say for sure if the "run as administrator" method was the reason, but I would do that just in case. It never hurts to try, and if nothing else, you can always do the more invasive XP/Vista folder transfer that others seem to be having success with.

Let me know if this helps anyone.

My Computer

I had the same issue(Vista Ultimate 32 bit), but it worked when I ran as Admin as well. Hover the mouse over the Rise Of Nations Icon, right click once and you get the context menu, and the third item from the top is Run as adminstrator. Click on that and that will run with added priveledges. If you don't have an administrator account, it won't work for you. With the way Vista is set up, you may have an admin account, but you logon and do everything as a standard user for security purposes (UAC< the annoying popups). If your account is not set up as an admins, you need to use someones account whom does have an admin account to run Run as admin with their credentials. Good Luck!

Rise of Nations Offline Vanilla Patch 4 | The Fishstickfoundation

So download the zip file, extract zip file;
inside you will find a folder called "rise of nations". Copy-paste that folder over your original installation folder when the game is not running. Default "C:\program files\microsoft games\rise of nations\".
It will ask you to replace some files, click yes.

Then start the game. The game will now have the correct version 02.04.04.2903 instead of 00.00.00.0000
Should work. Havent heared it didnt work, as long as you know how to copy paste a folder.

The reason you couldn't play other people online was because after the file patch, your software became version 00.00.00..... (It says this in LAN Play after you hit create, bottom-left corner) I'm hoping what Nicvaroce said is right, and I'm going to try that soon. Will post end result whenever possible.
