So I'm trying to install Age of Empires Gold Edition, and it gets to 100% and never finishes. Any ideas?

You should fill in your system specs; if don't know where to find them, open run, search it in search tab in the start menu (Click on the button) or if you have XP, it should also be in the start menu, as one of the tabs on the right.

Type in "dxdiag", without the "".

That will tell you your monitor, audio, video, RAM, manufacturer, hard drive, etc etc. Fill everything in as necessary. Please put as much detail as possible.

The error could also have been caused by incompatibility, if you are running Vista, since the game is quite old.

There, does that help? And also, I have heard of other people playing Age of Empires on Vista, so I hope that's not the case

Have you tried running the program in administrator? Open "Computer" then right click on the drive that the game disk is in, and select explore. Right click on the setup.exe or whatever the setup program is, then select run as administrator.

If that doesn't help, also try using the XP SP2 compatibility in the compatibility tab (Properties>Compatibility) as well if that doesn't work.

If none of that works, try opening run, then type in "msconfig". Click on the "Services" tab, and tick "Hide all Microsoft services". Then click disable all, restart your computer and try again. If it works or not, re-enable the programs again re-selecting them and rebooting.

I appreciate the advice, Mad, I really do. But the problem is that it won't even finish installing

Did your try running the setup program as administrator? This could also mean you don't have enough space, or possibly a virus.

You should try my advice, it can help with thorough installation. If it will not allow you to finish installing, a program, memory, or virus could be interfering.

So I tried all of those things, and none worked. The only difference being that when run XP compatibility, it seemed to go a step further by saying "Updating Files" but then it just stopped again.

Hmmm...I'm not really sure of the problem right now. I'll search around and come back a bit later when I find something.

Can you check whether your Vista is 64bit or 32bit? This may be the problem, as I suspect it does not work on 64bit.

Try going to the disk in the "Computer" tab, right click, then select explore. Select the AOESETUP.exe, except this time, select Windows 95 compatibility. That should fix the problem.

I tried running in 95 compatibility, it got stuck again at updating files. I'm not sure about the 64 or 32 bit, system specs didn't seem to say... I seem to have doubles of things like Program Files, with the second one saying x 84, is that related?

Edit: On the specs page, it has the option to run 64 bit Dxdiag, so perhaps it is 64 bit? If so, do you have an idea on how to overcome this problem given this information?

The x86 program files is mainly for third party software. The Program files folder however, is microsoft/windows files.

If you have the option to run in 64bit, your vista is probably 64bit. You can confirm this by right clicking on "Computer" then selecting properties. it should then display your operating system type, next to "System type".

I don't believe Ages of Empires 1 works on Vista 64bit. It works on 32bit though.

Sorry, there isn't a fix for 64bit right now. I have Ages of Empire 2: Gold Edition though, and it runs fine on my 64bit.
