Raptors - Just how much noise?

It looks like my main HDD is almost dead, its been making some rather dodgy noises all week and locking up.

Idealy my replacement would be a pair of Raptors raided, but i'm concerned about the noise levels, so a few questions for those who have them.

1) Do realy they make much more noise than a 7200?
2) Is there a noticable proformance increase?

I'm 95% sure I want these, but 5% is telling me I should just get a standard sata drive for 1/4 of the price.

The 750 GB western digital drive as well as the seagate Barracuda 1TB are both just as fast as the raptors, and in most situations, are faster.

the 36GB raptor is slow, only the 74 and 150 are worth anything. I believe the 74 is faster than the 150. The 74 is the only one that can keep up with the 2 drives I mentioned above.

The reason is the density of the tracks, the 2 drives I listed have way more bits per inch on the platter. So even though rotational speed is 7200 compared to 10,0000, the actual amount of bits passing under the head in a given amount of time is near the same.

After looking at the charts i'm now 60/40 in favor of the the 750 GB western digitals.

I hate buying hardware there are just to many choices

I have a WD 150 Raptor 10000 as bootdisk, and 2x Samsung 500 HDD. And the Raptor sound a bit some times, but its a nice sound!

here is another place to look at hard drive comparisons StorageReview.com i agree with what has been told to you already, the new 750's are as fast as the raptors and have a lot more storage space. plus if you want to run raid the western digital RE2's are top notch and get high reviews.

i agree with stevecn, the raptors are slower than modern 7200 drives, and they are hotter and noisier - they have been around a while. perpendicular recording achieves the same thing as well as much larger capacities - raptor a mistake in my view.

if you're concerned about noise, check out the samsung spinpoint - very quiet

i think raid is to be avoided unless you're doing high def video editing - it is a source of problems and only delivers 50% boost albeit over the entire drive

if i were you i would get the 750GB ones .
BUT then there is an improvement over the 7200 drives mostly in boot-up time, game loading etc (not much but its there).
So if you have the Cash go for it else buy the 750's :)

Hi,

I've just installed Vista HP x64 on a new machine with an old 36gb Raptor (from my previous machine) as a system disk and a couple of 320gb Spinpoints in RAID 1 for storage.

Anyway, having installed, sorted drivers and downloaded updates I went to bed only to find I get a Boot Disk failure error message on start-up. I pulled the raptor and did the install again on a new patition on the RAID array. I've got to say that I found the install to be quicker and a hell of a lot quieter once the raptor was gone!!

Not worth it in my opinion and it frees up a slot in the drive cradle allowing for another pair of mirrored 1TB drives.

Very impressed with how quiet the spinpoints are.

500GB WD HDD for me.

It runs very nice and quiet. I've heard of their praised RMA service (which I hope I don't have to use).

Only time I heard it was... ironically, during the Vista install :D

Why not go for the best of both worlds? Use a single Raptor as the system drive and RAID the big boys. Win - Win.

And to address your original question as to noise. The Raptors are a bit noisy, but not unbearably so - definitely nothing a little Sorbothane and a decent case couldn't alleviate.
