Shortcut Icon

I really dislike the new shortcut icon in Windows Vista. So my question is can I change it back or just plain remove it? Well I’ve searched it and the only way it seemed to be possible is by downloading a program. So my new question is, can I change the shortcut icon or get rid of it without having to install any programs? I’m fine downloading a program to change it but I just want to know if I can do it myself first.

Thanks,
Josh
