Copy the Operating System

Just joined, and also just finishing a new build.

I want to make a copy of my Operating System, x64Ultimate, and have partitioned a drive for it. I've read about Vista's Complete System Backup, but that copies the whole pc, and I want to only copy the OS. How do I do this in Vista or do I need something like Acronis for it? Thanks.

In case anyone else asks or wants to ask the above question, here's the answer. When you go in to back up the whole pc you're given a choice of which partition to back up. I didn't know that, thought I had to backup everything.

You cannot backup the OS without the programs installed.
You should have done that before installing anything. The Vista backup function does not compress the files, therefore your backup is just as big as the used space of the partition you want to backup.
I use Acronis. A tib (True Acronis Backup) file, using a standard compression, is about two third in size of the used space on the partition (drive) you create an image of.
This application is 100 per cent reliable and easy to use.Validate backup image after creation, just for sure!

I had the programs installed. What are you saying, I should have done that before installing anything-I don't understand what you mean.
Here's what I've done. After installing the OS and apps including photoshop, the total space of which was 49.8GB on C drive, I backed up the "C" drive, and it shows that the backup took 17.1GB of space on the "I" drive. I assumed that the lower amount of space it took was because of compression. Am I missing something?

vwayne,

From what you posted, I think Raymundka thought that you just wanted to have a backup of a clean installed Vista without anything else installed.

What you are doing is fine. We did not understand that you just did not want to backup other hard drives or partitions as well.

I should have made myself more clear. Thanks for clearing it up. BTW, it did compress the files, didn't it?

vwayne, yes it backed it up in a compressed encoded state to save space.
