Why some files are not indexed?

I have windows vista ultimate x64, and I noticed some files are not indexed. The file is in a folder that is being monitored by the index service, and its a .jpeg file. I already have rebuild my index, but the windows desktop search still misses the file.

Here is a video explaining this "bug" made by someone having the same problem:

Does anyone have the same problem? how can I fix it?

Are you able to use Windows Explorer (not Photo Gallery) modify the tags of the file/s (such as "Tags", "Rating", "Title", etc) in question? If not, then the files may not be JPEG, but could be some other format such as BMP that does not support inline tags. Just rename the file/s extension back to BMP, or use a program like ACDSee to convert them to correct JPG files.

And if your are attempting to search using filenames as criteria, then try this in a search window:

filename:"filename criteria"
That will force windows search to restrict the search results where only the filenames match the given "filename criteria". You can include a filename extension in criteria, but it is not required. The quotes are required only if the filename you are searching for contains spaces.

Also, for other types of searches, read this tutorial: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/158288-advanced-searches.html?ltr=A

Hi

Have you looked in the idexing option in the control panel under advanced there is a tab there to specify certain file types maybe it has been excluded.

There are some other option you may want to look at aswell. And remember once you have finished to rebuild the index. ;)

The problem is that the "Index this file for faster searching" is not checked by default in some files I download, so I have to manualy check this. Then I can find them in windows desktop search.

Is the "Index this file for faster searching" option turned on for the folder into which you are saving your downloads? If not, then this possibly explains why you ned to do it manually for a file whenever you save it to that folder...

This explains a lot, thanks. My "Downloads" folder is not beeing indexed, I tuned it off for this folder, because it changes a lot, I download a couple of files per day.

Question: Have you updated to Windows Search 4.0? Performance is significantly faster, and the index updates a lot quicker too. You may yet be able to turn on indexing for your particular downloading folder and have the search results you want if you do this. The tutorial link I gave earlier has a link to where you can get Windows Search 4.0, if it is not available to you via Windows Update.

Yes, I have installed Windows Search 4.0. I restored the default configuration of the index service, now windows index all my user folder. I think disabling index in some folders is more like a "placebo" than a real performance tweak.

Thanks!

Exactly. The search indexer slows itself down when you're using the computer anyway. Just go to the Indexing Options screen to see for yourself. And when it's running at full capacity, it scans something like 500+ files a minute.
