Is vista the right O.S for my friend?

As i am off to pastures new i thought i would give my old rig to a friend.
At the moment it runs XP pro (Very well i might add!) but my friend insists on wanting
Vista ultimate installed instead.
I have shown him the rig with XP running but he is not convinced!
So before he rushes out and buys a copy, i would like to get some "Real world"
opinions on vista ultimate on this hardware. (just so i dont get a ear full of abuse
if its slow as a snail!)

Specs
mobo UT RDX200 CF-DR
AMD Athlon 64 3800+ single core
Mem 2gig of Platinum OCZ DDR 400mhz
VGA card it did have two HIS x1650 pros in crossfire
but my mate is going to fit a Power color HD4850
HD two 160gig sata drives
Sony DVD rewriter

Thanks for your help!

He might want to invest in a dual core, especially if he's thinking of a 4850... other than that, no problem.

Those specs would run Vista perfectly fine. The suggestion of the dual core should be taken and ran with. As cheap as dual cores are nowadays you can get a really decent one for under 200 bucks and truly see the difference. If he ends up not liking the performance, he can always go back by doing a fresh install. Yet the comment about dual booting also would work great too.

If your friend is used to XP he is going to get the shock of his life when he sees Vista. They basically took the functionality of XP out of Vista. I have been working with it for off and on for almost a month and I still cannot figure some things out. And I do this for a living. It might be the wave of the future, but I will not by it until I have to.

I'm a computer tech/network anylist/ system builder..and on and on and Vista was a breeze. And is a breeze to teach. Prehaps computers arent your real interest if Vista is a "shock" to you.

Vista is easy to use and runs better then XP could ever run.

Prehaps you should stick to POS systems since it seems thats all you can handle.

Hi Joel, people do have different opinions about things and they can be both contradictory and both right. An inexperienced user of an application software might feel very comfortable with it and an experience user of the same software might feel it was limited in its options, whilst if the same type of software if geared towards the more experienced user, the experienced user might enjoy all the options and possabilities it offers and the inexperienced user might get lost, flumoxed and panicky at being presented with a whole host of options. It is not Vista is anyway a bad product but XP was a very good one in many respects and many people have short memories and forget the various problems XP went through, so they are compareing a mature XP with a new release product in the shape of Vista. Also many people were expecting Vista to keep all the good aspects of XP and add some facilities and whilst Vista is a good product and in many ways a massively superior one to XP, Vista superiority to XP is often at a technical level which while it does count e.g. the way graphics problems could crash XP but can't crash Vista, what many users wil see is that there are some human interface problems that Vista has compared to XP. E.G I can not understand why the run command has disappeared from the desktop or why explorer makes it so difficult to see where one is in the file structure compared to XP, my best guess is that MS was involved in some sort of internal argument as to whether to make Vista geared towards people whose ability is just about of the level of pressing the on switch on the PC or to make it for people who spend their entire lives in the basements of university computer science blocks and in the end the powers that be in MS, settled the argument by ordering that the Vista user interface be done in compromise between suiting computer know nothings and uber Geeks and in reality not suiting anybody at all. Don't get me wrong there is a lot to like about Vista, I have 1 x XP 32 home, 2 x XP 32 professional and 2 x XP 64 Professional and find myself useing the 1 x 64 Vista Ultimate most of the time now but all that said, I still believe that XP explorer does a much better job than Vista explorer.

Hi rugged man, if that is a 939 Socket board you have there, the Athlon 64 4800 with 1MB + 1MB cache is the sweetie, I have one and it runs Vista 64 like a dream, [ though they are super hard to get hold of now ] that said the Athlon 64 was a very capable processor even in its single core variant, so I would not imagine your rig would not have any problem with Vista unless it was used for something like gaming with a game that gives the CPU a tough workout. If your friend kept the XP and installed Vista in a dual boot, since I presume your XP is the 32 bit version [ if I am right about your present XP being the 32 bit version ] he or she could then go for the Vista 64 ultimate and not worry about any peripheral equipement or application software not working under Vista 64 since they could allways switch to XP to facilitate such factors.

is it a 939 board.. if it's the AM2 I have a AMD X2 3800+ 2.0 GHz CPU sitting next to me that needs a home.. he can use that. it would handle that 4850 much much better.

I'm to lazy to look up the specs on the board.. sorry lol

I doubt you'll find an Athlon 4800+ 939 pin anywhere but on eBay. There you run the risk of getting a bad core. The Opteron 180 I linked is the same thing though: 2.4GHz dual core, 2MB cache, 939 pin cpu... but like I said, they're dissappering fast.

Hi Ted

I was just going to post about how the Run box is still alive and kicking in Vista, when lo & Behold, I reach the bottom of the post and there you are....bugger! (LOL)

I find it a bit curious as to why people are having such a hard time finding it in Vista, it was in the same place as it was in XP really...rght click Start and choose properties, Start Menu tab, Customize, and it's right there like it always has been since W2K (I believe)

EDIT - and then the "Fumz'r" beats me to it....just can't get a word in tonite it seems :(

I still believe that XP explorer does a much better job than Vista explorer.

This usually means "I miss the 'Up one Level' button and haven't worked out that you can click on the folder above (or multiple levels above) in the address bar. Also, I didn't know about the Alt+[Up] shortcut".

Also, while I agree with Adrian's assessment of things, I do have to say that anyone who's been in the Windows environment for any length of time....lets say about 8 years or more, should have little difficulty getting used to Vista after a month or two of using it.
I would have to say there's either a little Vista bias in there, or laziness, or simply a lack of real world skills from a Program analyst type. Anyone with medium skill levels should be able to get around Vista rather handily after checking things out for a few weeks. Sure...we all found it to be a bit of Culture Shock at first but all the main stuff is still there in the same places, Control Panel, GPE..etc, and a few things are a bugger to find now but those are mostly for cosmetics and minor tweaks.

For a Program Analyst to come into a forum that's called "Vistax64" and make that kind of statement, he's kind of asking for someone to take a shot really. The "functionality of XP" has most certainly NOT been taken out of Vista, in fact I would argue that it's been Enhanced if anything.
But I don't take shots, I just point out the obvious.

Welcome to the foums jlavell, and please ask us whatever it is you need to help you get Vista hammered out.

Sounds realistic, I spent several hours on the net for a Canadian friend looking for a 939 4800 Dualie Athlon 64 from any Canadian outlet about a year ago and came up with Zilch, and yep the Opteron is a really good thing if one can get hold of one.

Hi thanx for the tips on getting to "Run" some I knew and some I did not, but I just found out that holding down the Windows logo key on the keyboard whilst hitting the letter R key on the keyboard, works as a short cut, somebody in my ISP's support office in Bombay office told me that, so I can't take any credit for finding that out....

How it is different from XP, when one sets up XP straight off the disk without any custom choices in the install being made, the Run box is there at the bottom of the screen in the left hand corner, in Vista one has to go looking for it after one has set up the operating system, I knew some of the ways of getting to it, but I missed it being there as a default from the get go. Since the short cut of depressing the Windows logo key and then pressing R is so handy, I can't say I care any more it does not appear default on the bottom of the screen
