Open and Save dialogs crash apps

Just put together a new system. Decided to install Vista 64. I'm having numerous problems.
IE7 fails to run. Error mentions actxprxy.dll.
Open and save dialogs crash Word 2007 and other apps.
Boot time is quite slow, with blank screen for about 20 seconds after login.
Sometimes, it is slow to take keyboard input. Processors are idle most of the time.

I've installed all the Windows, Office 2007, graphics processor updates. Ran office diagnostics.

Any ideas?

THanks!

Hello Raj:

SP1 is part of the install disk. Thanks for mentioning the event log. I'd forgotten about that. It revealed that my new hard drive had some bad sectors and was giving read errors. I ran check disk and that fixed some of the problems (IE7 now works). I ran sfc and it shows a number of corrupted files. I put the install disk back in to try to repair, but it complained that it was the wrong version of repair for my install (even though it is the same disk used to install).

Would it work to do a re-install? Or, will this wipe out some of my documents, preferences, and installed programs?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Nieuwsma,
It's always a good idea to backup your data first. I prefer a usb memory stick (thumb drive). Some choose to burn the data to a DVD. Somethings to also think about is scan the hard drives for any data you might have overlooked like in my documents or the root of the C drive. Make sure you got your programs ready to reinstall.

Do you have a upgrade DVD or Full blown version? I have the DVD Vista Upgrade and in order for me to do a clean install I have to have XP on my PC first. Then I boot up with Vista DVD and choose clean install, delete all paritions, create a new partition, format the partition then continue the install. A clean install has worked well for me and others in the past.

A Clean install will wipe out everything. I would think saving your data off the PC and then doing a clean install, everything should work. Second opinions are welcomed

Also Here is a tutorial on the start up repair and see if something was missed:

Also to help you out better can you provide the following info:
Exactly what version of Vista is on the computer
Exactly what version of Vista you have on DVD
What is the error message when you try to a repair?
