Chkdsk runs EVERYtime on startup - how do I make it STOP???

It says it can't repair the errors - no biggie. But now the utility won't stop running. Whether I restart within the utility or do a system restore to an earlier point in time, it just won't stop!!! GRRRRRRRRR

Any suggestions?

I have an idea...
You could try that out.

Start > Run > Msconfig

1- Check in general to have a normal Boot.
2- Go in the TAB Boot, go Advanced. All that should be checked is the Number of Processor ( Use the more you can for a faster boot ) and the Debug Report thing.
3- In the TAB Boot, nothing should be checked only the Make boot setting permanent.
4- Go at Services TAB and Uncheck CHKDSK if it is there
5- Go to Startup TAB and Uncheck if CHDSK is there

Thats all my IDEA.. See if it works, and tell us if it worked.

My problem however is that I can't get past the utility to do anything on my computer. It's perpetually stuck in the utility.

Alex - I can try and download the file in the link you gave me to a disc and see if it will run when I boot to that.

Check Disk - Reset - Windows 7 Forums

To disable automatic disk checking at Windows startup through registry, go to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager

In the right hand pane, double click BootExecute.
The default value of the key is autocheck autochk *
* means every drive is checked for consistency. Just add /K:C at the end before *. /K switch will disable autocheck on C: drive at Windows startup. So the final value should look like this:
autocheck autochk /k:C *


f you want to add more drives, the key should look like this: (disabling C and D drives)
autocheck autochk /k:C /k:D *
If you want to restore everything to default, just replace the key with the default one i.e.,
autocheck autochk *

old post, i know - but i just had the same problem and almost did a clean install.. instead, i advance booted, went into system repair, opened the command prompt, and renamed autochk.exe to autocheckwhatever.exe.. then rebooted. this will get you into windows to sort out this problem more efficiently. hope it helps.

I've always stopped this issue on the odd occasion it's cropped up quite simply....

Open a Command Prompt:

First check if the volume is labelled 'dirty' by Windows by typing in fsutil dirty query C: and click Enter (alter the drive letter if different)

If the chkdsk flag is stuck on it will tell you it's dirty.

Then type in chkntfs /x C: and click Enter.

That should do the trick.

It wouldn't harm to check the volume for errors now anyway the thorough way by typing in chkdsk /r or chkdsk C: /r (with all the spaces - change that drive letter if applicable) and click Enter.

It may say it can't run because the volume is in use, try at next reboot Y/N? Type Y and click Enter and reboot.

If the problem continues then the volume could well be more than just 'dirty' i.e. about to fail, anyway.
