DVD/RW not responding - can't find solution

Please help

Built a new pc last week. Installed vista 64, all was great!

Installed Crysis (what a game!!!)

Connected to the net...downloaded microsoft updates...dvd stops responding. Thats where i've been ever since.

I've spent hours trawling the net trying different things ie upper/lowerfilters (which don't appear in my registry), remove drive, re-install, checking drivers/firmware, apply registry patch, but still can't get it to work.

I've tried to start a fresh install of vista but without a dvd drive thats difficult!

Please, please, please (not sure how much begging required :-) hhheeelllppp:cry:

Phil

Edit

Device manager shows no errors - dvd working fine!
DVD is TSST Sh S223Q samsung dvd/rw
P5Q PRO m/b

hi phil, and welcome!

this is a puzzler: device manager recognizes the drive but the BIOS doesn't.

you mean you don't get a "press any key to boot from cd" message when you boot with vista dvd inserted? I assume you set the boot order in the BIOS to cd first.

does the system assign a drive letter to the drive ?

another thing to try is remove drive and test in another computer. perhaps the drive has failed. device manager is not reliable indicator.

sorry I am a bit stumped.good luck!

Hi geezer10

Yes it is a puzzler!

but..
device manager recognizes the drive as a standard cd rom assigns drive d:/, bios recognizes the drive (SATA 3) TSSTCorp cddvd/rw.

No, I don't get a message any more because the drive doesn't respond. The light on the front flashes, it sounds as though it's about to start but it stops. It does that for around 30 seconds (stopping and starting) then stops completely.

I am sure the drive hasn't died, it worked great Friday, before downloading 24 updates and patches! I have tried restoring but no use.

If I could reinstall vista back to Fridays state it would be something but without the drive i'm  !!!

It seems as though many people have had issues, it's just finding the right solution for me:shock:

The worst thing is I am looking at the Crysis cd now!!!!

After flashing appropriate firmware and it is still not working, the best thing I would do is spend 20 more bucks on a new one in different brand. Good luck.

Dunno if this has any bearing, but I got a firmware update for my TSST from

www.samsungodd.com

a few weeks back - maybe they identified potential issues with Vista this corrected .

I had to download and install their Liveupdate program - and that got the update and installed it on my dvd drive.

I see you can connect to the net ok, so it's definitely worth a try.

Hope this helps

Thanks for your help guys.

It looks as though I already have the latest firmware...

I think this thing is destined for the trash....I've contacted supplier for replacement..lets see how that goes!

Thanks again for your time

Losing my mind with dvd

Had a problem last week with my new system..dvd stopped responding.

After help from the forum I sent it back and got a new one. Did a clean install of Vista laoded everything, all good.

Been playing Crysis, music ets with dvd.

Turn on today put disc in...here we go again!

Error message "Application not found"

Tried uninstalling dvd..reboot..dvd does not see disk. Tried changing Autoplay but nothing.

I've searched the web and there seems to be hundreds of issues with cd's/dvd's.

Has anyone got any ideas how to help. I'm really p****d off with vista at the moment and I'm sure theres a simple explanation (no I don't want to go out and spend a fortune on a copy of XP!)

Thanks in advance

Phil
