I think I fried my laptop, How can I fix it? :(

Well, I have a laptop. The cord on it is slightly frayed at one point, so I put some electrical tape over it until I got a replacement charger for it. It had worked fine many, many times since then. Tonight it just turned off completely when I was in the middle of something when I slightly bumped it (very light bump with my leg, not enough to do any kind of physical damage). It didn't keep working off the battery as if the power was lost, it died instantly. The light for the power supply doesn't light up when I plug it in like it used to, and when I hit the power button it doesn't flash the power light to indicate no battery charge as it used to. It's now a fancy paperweight, and I'm not getting any kind of repsonse out of it. So, how do I fix it? What parts could have fried like that to where I wouldn't get any kind of response from the computer at all? Please, any and all advice would be GREATLY appreciated! I've had this laptop for a while, and it would be nice to have it for a while to come smile.gif Thanks in advance. Woody

Did your battery ever get charged at all when you used your laptop if not your battery is not good anymore. Have you gotten your new power supply and where was the cord damaged at.

Yeah, my battery has always worked fine, and always charged fine, but when I bumped it tonight it just shut down completely, it didn't just switch to battery power like I had lost the power or anything like that. The power cord was damaged right by where the cord turns into the plug that goes into your computer.

Ok let me get this straight you have tried you laptop without the power source and it will not turn on at all correct.

HI Treehugger, and a belated welcome to the forums,

Sorry to hear about your problems,

Hopefully what has happened is that at some point the power to the charging circuit has stopped due to the damaged power cord, and when the battery has run out the laptop has simply shut down, Dit you receive any warning beeps at all?.

Of course the worst case scenario is that when the charger was nudged this caused a short on the cable and this could have caused damage to the charging circuit, if this is the case then I'm afraid that a replacement motherboard would probably be required :(.

You may want to remove the battery from the laptop for a few hours and then replace it. This can sometimes coax a little power from an exhausted battery. Also when you receive the new charger unit I would allow the unit to charge the battery for at least an hour as the battery will be totally exhausted and will need this time to recover.

Hope it's only a discharged battery problem and the new charger will solve your problems.

No, that's the thing, normally when my computer is on battery power, and then dies, the power light will flash when I press the power button, but now it's not flashing or anything. I have a new power cord coming to replace mine anyways, but I can tell from the way my comp's acting (or not reacting) that it's not just the cord. I also tried that, I had removed the battery from my comp for 3hrs to determine if I could reset it that way, and it didn't restart. I tried starting it with each card of RAM seperately, to test if I had blown one, but didn't work either.

Hi Tree Hugger,

Without being able to apply power to the laptop your options are limited as any diagnostics would need specialist equipment plus the dismantling of the unit :(. as soon as you get your new charger plug this into the laptop and let it charge for several hours. hopefully this will be all that is required

If your cord was frayed, and the "bump" caused a short..you may have just fried one or several things on the board. If this is true.. even a good battery wont give you anything. A person with alittle knowledge with a multimeter could track through the board to tell you if current can run through its path..if somethings been fried on the board.. the path stops...A new cord would be the next try to see if anything happens when connected.. but if nothing happens.. you will have to find where the problem is....and start there replacing parts. Its sort of like when lightning hits your TV or computer...it fries things in its path...if theres something burned up by the short, a good battery cant get power to anything inside..so even a good battery wont help.Good luck and sorry.

Well, the computer's already in parts. I took off some of the stuff to get it to the point where I can plug in my new charger when I get it, but it's not to the point where it would be dangerous to plug a charger into :) I know it's more than just a battery at this point, and I have a bad feeling I'm going to be getting a new motherboard relatively soon :(

My Computer

It sounds like it may be cheaper just to buy a new laptop. Or at least take it to a shop to get repaired where they have spares they can test. This is one of the benifits of a shop, they do not have to pay for an item if the computer still does not work after swapping something. They just swap it back again.

1) I asked at Best Buy, and they said I can return their stuff even if it's opened :) and if I have to buy anything off of eBay, I can just turn around and sell it on eBay if I don't need it afterall.
2) Having someone else work on my computer IS expensive (and boring for me :geek:), and even if they don't charge you for the parts they test, you damn well know they're charging you for their time
3)I found a couple motherboards on ebay for $100-$130, so that would defiantly be cheaper... unless you know where I can pick up a new laptop for $130??

My Computer

It depends on if you can get parts. Generally it is cheaper to buy new. A laptop retails for about £300 over here. I do get your point as I work on my own system and you do have to pay for the time at a shop. I think it is a preference thing and how many spares you have sitting at home. When I did my new build it was a compleate build so I sold my old computer to help pay for the new one.

Well I got my new charger today. The thing is seriously 3ft long!!? I am going to need an extension cord to use it with the outlet next to my bed ( I can touch the wall that the outlet is on while I'm sitting on my bed
sad.gif
) Damn eBay! Anyways..... My RAM, motherboard, and battery seem to be fine. I think my harddrive is crapped out though. When I try starting the comp now it'll load the normal boot screens fine, but when it starts loading the HDD, it freezes and makes all kinds of weird patterns on my screen. I'm going to try to see if I can reinstall my OS on the HDD to see if maybe it just got scrambled or something got erased, and that would be really nice
smile.gif
Anyone have any other ideas I can try before getting a new HD? Thanks again everyone!

Well, I'm running Linux on it, not Windows, but I can load from an installation disc fine, but now it keeps on dying when I start it normally. I put the old RAM back in, and it starts now, but the whole computer dies completely at the same spot in loading the OS. When it does this it flashes the power and charging lights like a strobe light. I've never seen this before for any reason, so it's completely new to me. The only way to get it to stop is by taking out the battery and power cord and waiting a minute. Could this be a cheezy power adapter? I bought it off of eBay, and it's some no-name company making these?

My Computer

If you have a multimeter you can check the output voltage and ampage. This will tell you if your battery is getting the juice it needs to charge.

You may want to check some of the smaller electrical conponents on your motherboard. A touch check for a hot component will tell you if something is dead or dieing.

It may work fine for a while but heat up quickly changing the electrical characteristics.
