No Desktop

My niece’s laptop will not complete a full boot freezing just before I would expect to see the desktop.

HP 530 Notebook with Vista Basic
Intel Celeron M 440 @1867 MHz
512 MB Memory

Advance Boot Options (F8)
Safe Load loads to screen immediately prior to desktop. (Black screen with Safe Load at all corners.)
Safe Load Command Prompt Loads to Safe Load Black screen but no prompt.
Normal Load goes to Welcome screen and shows the wait symbol.

By using “Repair Your Computer” option:
1. I tried restore points but did not resolve issue and restore points disappeared once I tried to restore prior to Service pack 1
2. I can access the command prompt. I can change directories and do directory listings.
3. Individual partitions are c:\ d:\recovery and e:\sources. There is reference to x:\windows\system32 789 files and 71 Directories taking about 146 MB. there appears to be unnamed directories in d: & e:

Owing to previous problems – now resolved – a back up or restore disk was not made. We have the Vista disks downloaded from the laptop.

Can someone please advise how I can restore the desktop. I can reinstall Vista but her personal data and info would be lost.

Thank you

Alex

Thanks for suggestion - F11 offers a ful recovery to original factory condition. Something I will do only as a last resort.

Yes, you can still get into the startup repair through there.

Have done F11 and accepted the backup of personal details - now recovery manager wishes to format hard drive and recover to x factory condition.

I cannot get the Vista discs from my niece before the weekend and am going on holiday late Saturday.

Is there any other way of restoring the decktop?

"We have the Vista disks downloaded from the laptop." Usually, it is a single DVD that comprises the Vista installation media. But if you only have a CD burner, I presume your pc allowed you to create those in place of the DVD. If the Vista disks "downloaded from the laptop" are only for restoring the pc to factory state, rather than including a real Vista recovery CD (allowing you to boot into the Recovery Environment), then this alternative remains:

So, if you don't have a Vista installation DVD, what do you do in order to access the Vista Recovery Environment, at least? You go to this site and download the makings for a recovery disk:
Windows Vista Recovery Disc Download — The NeoSmart Files

After you have burned the recovery CD, then you can try Startup Repair from the Recovery Environment:

See if you can get into safe mode and right click on computer then advance system settings then click on startup and recovery settings button and uncheck automatically restart to get the all caps words and the stop errors.
