RAM Issues

Hi, Currently i have Corsair XMS2 DDR2 1GBx2 memory sticks in my computer, i installed vista with this Ram and then after installation decided to place another 2GB's of RAM.

My issue currently is that Windows Vista will not load with 4GB's of Ram or even 3GB's. When i try to re-install Windows Vista with the new RAM in my pc restarts before installation begins, when i plug the ram in and try to run Vista normally, it either restarts at the loading screen or just crashes completely.

My PC Specifications are as follows:

Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4 Abit Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5200+ 2.70GHz
2GB Ram
GeForce 8600GTS 512MB Graphics Card

I have heard that there is a windows update which may resolve this issue however you need 3GB's of RAM installed, which my computer wont allow.

Any Bios related or any solution in general, could you please go into great detail and if possible step by step guides of how to fix this problem, i have a basic bios knowledge however take my knowledge as 0. (I have also Updated Vista to SP1 and have completed all Vital Updates)

Thanks.

Hi spawnuk and welcome to the forums

Have you got SP1 installed? This service pack fixed a number of issues - one of these was to do with memory problems. My copy of Vista already has SP1 included, and I installed it with 4GB of RAM without any problems. There have been numerous reports of installation problems with more than 2GB of RAM prior to SP1 - in fact, some even recommend using a maximum of just 2GB to install Vista and then install SP1 prior to increasing the amount of RAM in the system.
Here is a link to SP1: Download details: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone for x64-based Systems (KB936330). Download this file and save it before running it. After it has successfully installed (please note that this may take a while - allow it to finish), try to see if you can use the rest of your memory.

What happens when you swap the RAM over (i.e. remove the existing memory and replace it with the additional RAM)? Try different combinations of 2GB. Also, try the RAM that you know works and see if it still works in the other memory slots.

I followed your instructions and found out that one of my New RAM sticks does not function properly, i mixed and matched as you told because just the 2 new ones didnt work, when i did mix and match i found out that infact one of them was damaged/malfunctioning and now have 3GB of RAM working properly.

Thank you for your assistance, now i have to send these back:confused:.

Thanks alot Dwarfe, you saved me alot of hassle hehe. :p
